Trump Tarnishes Image for a Fistful of Dollars in Azerbaijan
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/harut-sassounian/trump-tarnishes-image-for_b_7958500.html
Harut Sassounian 12 August 2015 excerpt:
A few years ago when Trump agreed to lend his name to a hotel in Azerbaijan, he could not have predicted that associating with a notorious Baku oligarch would not only reflect negatively on his political ambitions, but also create a serious conflict of interest should he become President.
Even though the hotel would carry his name, Trump is neither the builder nor owner of Trump International Hotel & Tower Baku. Nevertheless, he earns lucrative management fees for lending his name and expertise to the project, according to Russ Choma author of a critical article in Mother Jones magazine, titled: Donald Trump is Doing Business with a Controversial Azerbaijani Oligarch.
Trumps recently filed financial disclosures, a requirement for presidential candidates, revealed that his company received $2.5 million from Baku in 2014, even though the hotel is slated to open its doors later this year.

Donald Trump Is Doing Business With a Controversial
Azerbaijani Oligarch
Russ Choma Wed Jul. 29, 2015 excerpt:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/07/donald-trump-azerbaijan-anar-mammadov
Good government and humanitarian groups consider Azerbaijan one of the worlds most repressive and corrupt countries due to the regimes intolerance for dissent and the high degree of concentration of wealth among the politically powerful and their families. Human Rights Watch had the following grim assessment of the country:
Azerbaijans government has escalated repression against its critics, marking a dramatic deterioration in an already poor rights record. In recent years, dozens of human rights defenders, political and civil activists, journalists, and bloggers have been arrested or imprisoned on politically motivated charges, prompting others to flee the country or go into hiding. Bank accounts of independent civic groups and their leaders have been frozen, impeding their work, or in some cases forcing them to shut down entirely. New legal regulations make it almost impossible for independent groups to get foreign funding. While criticizing the increasing crackdown, Azerbaijans international partners have failed to secure rights improvements.
Mammadov has demonstrated a keen interest in American politics. He heads the Azerbaijan American Alliance, a group that at one point was registered with the US Department of Justice as a foreign lobbyist.
Last year, the alliance spent more than $2.8 million lobbying Congress and State Department to improve US-Azerbaijan relations. So far this year, the group has spent at least $500,000 trying to influence US lawmakers and officials.
Like Trump, Mammadov is a colorful figure. Educated in London, he serves as the head of his countrys golf federation and claims on his website to have a wide range of experience in leadership, decision-making, strategy, international affairs, politics, communication, human rights, environmental protection, fundraising, public relations, sponsor relations and public speaking.
Mammadovs personal life has been a heavily covered topic in Azerbaijani opposition newspapers, which in 2010 published reports that Mammadov had been expelled from Dubai following a raucous dinner party with friends. Azeri media outlets also reported that Mammadov had paid a local restaurant more than $1 million to slaughter a bear kept there and serve kebabs from the meat. Mammadov has denied these stories repeatedly.
In recent years, he successfully sued Azerbaijans two major opposition papers for libel over stories about his personal life. International press monitoring organization Reporters Without Borders condemned the suits, which financially crippled the papers, and described the legal action as part of a campaign to harass and suppress the free press.

Azerbaijan: Staying Mum on Trumps Call for a Muslim Travel Ban
December 17, 2015 - 5:38pm, by Durna Safarova excerpt:
http://www.eurasianet.org/node/76606
The vocal response in the Gulf, as well as in Turkey, to Trumps call for a Muslim travel ban contrasts sharply with the muted reaction in Azerbaijan. State-controlled mass media has largely avoided the topic, and representatives of the Azerbaijani government have not commented publically on Trumps inflammatory statements.
Our government will not respond to this issue, said Natig Jafarli, the executive secretary of the opposition movement REAL. Generally, the Azerbaijani government always prefers to remain silent in these kinds of situations.
Azerbaijani leaders have demonstrated increasingly authoritarian tendencies in recent years, carrying out a far-reaching crackdown on basic rights while taking steps to muzzle independent media outlets. On December 17, a US legislator, Christopher Smith, a New Jersey Republican, introduced a bill that would impose sanctions against members of Azerbaijans elites. Specifically, the legislation would deny visas to those who derive significant financial benefit from business dealings with senior leadership, and members of the security or judicial branches in Azerbaijan.

Hotel Project in Muslim Country Mysteriously Vanishes From Donald Trumps Website
Russ Choma Thu Dec. 10, 2015 excerpt:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/12/azerbaijan-hotel-vanishes-from-donald-trumps-website
In July, a representative for Trump Hotel and Tower in Baku told Mother Jones that the hotel would open by the end of the year. The building appeared to be complete, and job postings suggested that staff were being hired for the property. But sometime this fall the Baku hotel disappeared from the Trump Hotel Collection.
According to Trumps personal financial disclosure form, his company last year received at least $2.5 million to manage the property and lend his name to the project. The hotel itself is owned by Anar Mammadov, a billionaire whose father is the transportation minister in the authoritarian Azerbaijani government.
Mammadov is also the founder of the Azerbaijan American Alliance, an advocacy group that this year has spent more than $1.3 million lobbying Washington. Mammadovs interest in US politics is seen as part of a larger effort by the countrys leadership to soften the regimes kleptocratic image. The regime has been harshly criticized by human rights groups for its crackdown on civil society, including its near eradication of a free press.
James Fabiani, the lobbyist who represents Mammadovs group in Washington, did not respond to a request for comment.
So has Baku gone bye-bye for the Muslim-bashing mogul? Whatever the fate of the hotel project, the GOP candidates Azeri business associate cant be pleased with Trumps anti-Muslim rhetoric. Its not clear if Mammadov is Muslim, but more than 96 percent of Azerbaijans population is. A hotel with the bombastic billionaires name on it may no longer be a good sell in the region.
Life is short, and I’m very old.
What’s your point? (in 25 words or less) : )
I know! The first time I ever viewed one of their videos, I said the same thing. They should have a daily TV or radio talk show. They would certainly be a Yuge hit!
Looking forward to your comments after you watch them. (Keep in mind, this video is much longer than their usual videos are, but it’s good. They talk about several different issues, from the terrorist attacks in Brussels, to the Arizona Trump supporter who punched the “protester,” to the voting fraud in Utah, to the Melania Trump ads, etc. For example, at about 12:30 they start talking about the Trump supporter in Arizona who punched the protester.)
BFL
I cannot believe you actually cited a Mother Jones article. I am truly astonished. The writers at MJ have scarcely a single synapse that hasn’t been drug-addled to share among themselves.
LOL I thought of the length and put this at the top...the lady who made the Mrs. T ad was being paid by the Muslim “king” who paid DT 2.5 mil to use his name. I think it’s payback for the immigration policy.
I lived with a pathological liar and there are always nuggets of truth.
