“We’re so self-important. Everybody’s going to save something now. “Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails.” And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. Save the planet, we don’t even know how to take care of ourselves yet.

"Whales are awesome."

Indeed, they are. I remember a few years ago there were five or six of them just hanging out on a group for several days in Stillwater Cove right off the pier at the Beach Club at Pebble Beach. I was watching them one day trying to take some pictures and ran into a guy from the aquarium who told me there was a mother and young calf resting from the migration north and the others were there protecting them.

Very much like elephants.

[[We now have a shortage of all prey upon which these species feed,]]

Lol- noone is up in arms about the diminishing prey species the wales feed on- cuz krill, needlefish and herring aint cool i guess-

But i say protect hte krill, protect the needlefish! Dangit- they have feelings too lol

[[While I don’t agree with wholesale slaughter of any species,]]

I’ve always wondered What’s the difference between harvesting a herd of whales compared to harvesting a herd of cattle? (assuming the whales aren’t endangered of course) Food is food-

This is the exact opposite of keeping kosher. One reason for keeping kosher is kindness to the animal, to not take her milk to cook her dead baby in. That one is obvious. But there is another reason, that we are to control our appetites by paying attention to what we eat, limiting even though some things taste good. Like we do with sex. Limiting it to a spouse, timing, etc.

It seems the Japanese always seek to excite their bored palates no matter who or what has to die for it. And I love Japanese food and culture. But this is such cruelty for nothing but feeding dull palates.

“Tough questions I know. While I don’t agree with wholesale slaughter of any species, we have to admit there comes a time when the over protection of any species leads to other problems as well.”

Reminds me of the classic “Kaibob Deer” where they were a protected species somewhere (Arizona? Teddy Roosevelt?) No hunting allowed. They soon over-ran the place, and weak from lack of food. But nature took care of it - some disease killed most of them off in their weakened state. I have no idea how long it took the land to recover.

“There’s other meat out there that isn’t in danger of becoming extinct.”

This is a myth.

Japan does not hunt endangered species of whales.

Always has been. We all knew this was bs.

Japan sucks hard on this issue. Wjo are they to bypass treaties everyone else has to follow. Personally like to see their ships go down.

Japan is one of the wealthiest countries on earth. They can’t find something else to eat?! If Japan continues to hunt and eat whales it won’t last forever though. Japan is dying. The population is shrinking because their reproduction rate is fast-falling. And they don’t have many immigrants. Japan as we know it will cease to exist in just a few generations.

Whales and seals have become pests off the Oregon coast too. They need to start managing them here
