Baseball, broadcasting legend Garagiola dies

A pleasant and caring man, one who reveled in his mostly modest playing career in the big leagues, his receded -- not receding -- hairline and, it seemed, all facets and phases of his decades on the planet, has left us behind, behind and smiling. Joe Garagiola, a most entertaining, engaging and convivial sort, has died, bringing to an end a full, rich life and leaving the game without one its most enduring personalities, an energetic crusader and folksy humorist.

I loved watching and listening to Vin Scully and Joe Garigiola Saturday mornings on NBC game of the week. Baseball has not been the same since. RIP Joe and say hi to Yogi Berra.

I was an admirer of Joe Garagiola. He was one of the guys I wanted to be when I was a kid. funny thing even after over 60 years, I do not think I ever heard anything said about him in a negative manner. He seemed to be loved and admired by all
RIP Joe.

RIP Joe. He was the closest friend of the immortal Yogi Berra, who also died this year. Joe was a great baseball personality in his own right and was one of the finest announcers in baseball history. He was what we’d call a journeyman catcher in the major leagues, pretty solid defensively and a bit anemic as a hitter. An amazing man and an amazing, fantastic life.

Takes me back to the NBC Game of the Week in the early 70’s, and staying up very late during the ‘75 World Series to watch Carlton Fisk hit that home run.

RIP, Joe.

I remember an interview many years ago. I can’t remember the others but Yogi Berra was not the only other major leaguer who grew up in the same neighborhood as Joe.

Their banter was sometimes more entertaining than the game itself, wasn't it?

I remember reading his book Baseball is a Funny Game where he rated the Philadelphia Phillies fans as the rudest, most obnoxious in all of baseball. Funny how that hasn't changed in the more than 40 years since the book was written.

Even the New York Mets fans who come to visit us at PNC Park are polite by comparison.

They were all young worshippers of the Gashouse Gang in the Thirties. A great link to the past.

Rest in peace, Joe, you were one of the good ones. Thanks for all of the great memories.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. By the mercy of God, may he rest in peace. Amen. +

In 1976, when Gerald Ford was running for President, he made a campaign appearance at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. One thing I remember was that Joe Garagiola was on stage to introduce the President to the crowd.

I remember Joe campaigning for President Ford.

I remember some liberal types at the time complaining, because at the time Joe was on the Today Show, I believe, and those liberals charged it was bias, to have media reporters endorsing political candidates.

Well, given that we have people in the media such as Clintonista George Stephanopolus(sp?) and Tip O’Neill alumnus Chris Mathews, it’s hard to listen to criticism that somebody like Joe G. was for Ford.
