The nation's Republicans are working against the clock to answer two key questions: Can conservative Ronald Reagan possibly attract enough independent and Democratic votes to win in November?
"Reagan is the opponent of choice for Carter," says I. A. Lewis, director of the Los Angeles Times Poll, a point on which most analysts agree. "But Reagan can reach across and cause mischief in the Democratic constituency," Mr. Lewis says. "Reagan appeals to blue collar, working-class voters. He can win Democratic votes..."

I still remember the ‘76 Convention like it was yesterday. The Reagan delegates made a valiant effort to unseat Ford as the nominee but came up short. The convention delegates voted. Ford won. Afterwards, Ronald Reagan stepped to the microphone and gave an impassioned speech. At the conclusion, every delegate in that convention hall realized they had nominated the wrong man.
I'll still be here, you can count on it. When Trump expedites illegals back into the US, I'll still be here. When Trump takes us a step further into socialized medicine with central government payouts for localized individual health care costs, I'll still be here. When Trump partners with Bernie Sanders to implement the same style of protectionism that kept us in the Great Depression for a decade, I'll still be here. You see, I have actually gotten past the "I'll build a wall" part and listened to the rest of what Donald Trump has had to say. And sadly, there is nothing Conservative about it.
News flash! Subhuman scumbags were compared to communist protesters in a terrible insult to subhuman scumbags everywhere.
Log Cabin...
Absolutely. Reagan was the only one who could win and save this country at the time. Now we are even more dire straits and Trump is the only one who can win and get this country back. I can't imagine any other candidate actually debating hiLIARy, Cruz/Kasich/Romney will be under orders to lay off her. She will win with no problem. Political correctness will not allow anyone to say a word about the server, the emails, the foundation, Benghazi, etc. Only Trump can do it. Now is not the time for high-minded moral stances, because the other side will defeat us.
Reagan ran during a time when people valued those properties. Trump is running in a time when your children and grandchildren were never taught those properties.
Different times, different campaigns. Trump is doing fine...and winning.
Trump can’t hold a candle to Reagan - not as a candidate, not as a man. Not even close.
There's very little margin left for the GOP and probably no slack available for a Reagan-like upward swing.
The point of an election is to actually be able to win. Cruz cannot win. Cruz is like Obama. A first term senator with no record that I can find of executive experience.
So in other words, Trump is like Romney.
Sounds like you have been listening too much to Democrat talking points. You probably think that Trump’s supporters beat up people at rallies too. That’s too bad.
You really have gone over to the dark side.
I mention Will because he was a strong supporter and friend of Reagan. Heck, George Will routinely helped Reagan prepare for debates. Isn’t it curious that so many of Reagan’s 1980s allies—folks who knew Reagan personally— despise Trump? Folks who think that Trump is Reagan 2.0 are clueless and delusional. Trump is the Anti-Reagan.
What did Romney win? He had no passion. He allowed the establishment to convince him not to debate after the first one. He lost, I am not investing in another loser. I need someone with passion, who can win. That is Trump. No he is not perfect, but he is who we need right now.
You sound just like the establishment - before Romney went down in flames.
You’re right Donnie is not perfect. That’s because he’s a RINO.
I’m not going to vote for a RINO like Trump in the primaries, any more than I did for Romney in 2012.
Why are you settling for a RINO now?
Great points. 1980, however, was not “red and blue state America”.like it is today. A conservative could win California in 1980. No way today. Hmm I wonder why??? illegals maybe????
The only “blue” states trump has a chance in are Michigan and Wisconsin; perhaps PA. This is the pure battleground where trump needs to spend all of his time,
He takes 2 of these 3, he wins.
“Folks who think that Trump is Reagan 2.0 are clueless and delusional. Trump is the Anti-Reagan.”
Makes you wonder if these freepers were even of voting age and can recall what Reagan was really like, doesn’t it?
Trump is nothing like Reagan. They argue all they want about them both being liberal Democrats, but Reagan started his transformation much longer before he ran for President and stuck with his principles throughout. Furthermore, never once did I ever see Reagan go backward on a conservative position he took a stand on, let alone change his position during the same debate or even the same week of a campaign.
There is someone who Trump is very much alike though. He was a extremely wealthy businessman who held all kinds of prior liberal positions. And like Trump, the consensus was that he had to be nominated because supposedly he would win and a conservative candidate could not.
Yes. Trump is just like Romney.
Why Trump-pets would not even vote for Romney in the general election but would vote for this testerone-filled RINO as the Republican nominee is beyond me.
Perhaps you missed the last sentence in my post.....
