Confab ahead of AIPAC speech meant to improve relationship with congressional GOP.
Donald Trump will host a group of nearly two dozen influential Republicans on Monday afternoon for an off-the-record gathering that his allies hope will improve his relationship with the congressional GOP and the party’s Washington establishment, according to two attendees.
The meeting is Trump’s first major meeting with lawmakers and key Republican figures since last fall, when he met with a smaller group at the Capitol after his speech at a protest against the Iranian nuclear agreement.
Several members of the House and Senate are expected to participate, plus a bevy of consultants and veteran power brokers, the attendees said, requesting anonymity to discuss the session.

Being the Republican nominee is no position of power; see Bob Dole, John McCain and Mitt Romney. He needs something from them, like 35% of active republican voters who say they won’t vote for him.

Did you think Trump would never talk to these people again. He needs the party to pull together to beat Hillary. He doesn’t need to follow their orders though like Cruz or Kasich.

Cruz did it because he was losing and needed their help to stop Trump. And Cruz probably accepted any conditions they laid down.
Trump is meeting with them, because Trump is almost certain to win the nomination regardless of what they do. And they will likely accept any conditions that Trump lays down. If not now, later.
Of course Trump will not be asking for money. However, in politics money is not the end all, favors are. And yes I agree with you that the end result of Trump's meeting may be very different than meeting between Cruz and a certain kind of insider.
I will say again, I do not think that Cruz is perfect, far from it, and I do not think Trump is horrible. I think as a woman who has been on this site for 20 years that I would like see more reasoned thought and less insults.
