Donald Trumps appeal is said to be his straight talk. But when it comes to international trade, he sounds like a hypocrite, the classic Do what I say, not what I do politician.
While bashing companies for investing in foreign countries, Donald Trumps own company has shown no inclination to invest and build only in America. In fact, a significant percentage of his companys hotels and major real estate properties are located abroad. Mr. Trump is either inexcusably hypocritical or inexcusably ignorant of economics, according to Donald J. Boudreaux, a professor of economics at George Mason University. There is zero economic difference between, say, a U.S. car companys investments abroad in factories and Mr. Trumps own investments abroad in hotels: both are meant to improve the bottom line of companies headquartered in the U.S. by taking advantage of profitable economic opportunities outside of the U.S.

Not killing my ad blocker to read this.
Trump garners more endorsements in a single day than most other candidates in an entire year!
It would be like saying that as a real estate investor who buys property in different states, that I'm somehow hurting my home state.
Dumb.
If you can figure out how to build a hotel in America and transport it overseas - let us know.
He is the grand hypocrite. If elected POTUS (highly unlikely but always possible in this day of rigged voting machines), the Republic dies.
Trump has been playing by the rules. The rules are in favor of off-shoring.
Trump wants to change the rules to be in America’s favor. They are not now.
Got it
I don’t know how you build a hotel for another country in the U.S.. But I’m not a genius professor
grasping at straws ping
Wow... this is the camel which broke the straw’s back. I’m gonna vote Clinton now. Why bother having hope when you can vote directly for no hope?
When GM moves factories abroad UAW members lose jobs - USA loses.
When Trump builds a hotel overseas, much of the profits wind up with Trump, who is a US citizen - USA gains.
I’m not even a Trump supporter, and I’m scratching my head over this one. Does the author really believe that an auto plant that produces things in a foreign country for import into the U.S. is the same as a hotel in a foreign country?
Welcome to Dubai’s Latest hotel! Located in Hoboken NJ
There is zero economic difference between, say, a U.S. car companys investments abroad in factories and Mr. Trumps own investments abroad in hotels”
Yep, Trump can build those hotels abroad at a cheaper cost, and then bring the hotels on boats back to the United States, and sell them to Americans at a premium price, duty free.
Are you for auto company bailouts?
Investing abroad is not the same as outsourcing jobs.
I remember the wailing when Sony (?) was going to buy the Rockefeller Center. I thought, what the hell? It’s not like they can take it home with them.
How about if GM builds a plant overseas and uses it to produce a new line of vehicles that was never built in the U.S. in the first place?
Building Hotels abroad is “Out Sourcing”? That’s ridiculous.
