Oscars Ratings: Return Of Chris Rock Sees Show Hit 8-Year Low
Deadline.com ^ | 2/29/16 | Dominic Patten

Posted on 02/29/2016 6:27:30 AM PST by LdSentinal

Chris Rock came out swinging in one of the best opening monologues in years and took on the diversity controversy from the get-go at the 88th Academy Awards. Last night also saw Brie Lawson win Best Actress, Leonardo DiCaprio snag Best Actor in his fifth nomination, Alejandro G. Iñárritu was named Best Director and Spotlight won Best Picture. With all that, the Oscars themselves had a not such a great night with a 23.1/37 in metered market results.

That’s down 6% from the 24.6/39 that the ceremony got last year in early results from the 56 markets across the country. That 2015 Neil Patrick Harris hosted Oscars were matched with the 2011 Oscars for the third worst the Academy Awards has done in MM ratings since the last time Rock fronted the gig in 2005 – only 2009’s 23.3 and 2008’s 21.9 were lower.

The 2005 Oscars were the best the show has done in the past decade with a 30.1/43 MM rating. That high has also remained true in later numbers for the show. With Million Dollar Baby winning Best Picture, the 2005 Oscars ended up with a massive 42.14 million viewers and 19.6 million among adults 18-49. In both categories, that was a dip from 2004’s results. Compared to the last time Rock hosted 11-years ago, last night’s 8:30 – midnight show was down 23% in metered market results.

Last year’s Oscars ended up with 37.3 million total viewers and an 11.0/26 rating in the key demo. That was the lowest performance among adults 18-49 since 2008 and the lowest viewership since 2009. We will update with more numbers from last night’s Oscars as they come in.

Chris Rock stuck it to the man while pocking his paycheck.

All I saw in the audience was a room full of cowards. No one got up and walked out, no one stood up to defend America. They are too afraid in this supposedly racist country to say anything negative about a black.

Cowards one and all and they should be ashamed of themselves to sit there and take it like naughty children.

I wonder how many will return next year to be preached and told they stole their awards from more deserving blacks.

If they do return, they then deserve what they get.

Re: The 88th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony: The Oscars

Gadzooks-- If a white person watching Chris Rock & the Oscars last night wasn't a racist... afterwards, he damn well had good reason to become one!

The only thing Chris did not cry racism about... was there not being more dead Blacks in Oscar's "In Memoriam" segment.

"Just my luck, Bendy, I finally do die... and they leave me out 'cause I'm just a another old too damn white man!"

It would not bother me at all if the Chinese made good on one of their multiple threats to “take out” LA.

Screw Hollywood and all their virtue signaling. Really when they bash “whitey” is “whitey” a codeword for something, because I mean no producer comes and asks me a damn thing about their business?

Not only was it a “must watch”, but many newspapers actually printed a “ballot” so you could “vote” for your individiual favorites. The next morning, at work, people compared their personal results with co-workers. Killed half of the morning.
It’’s 2016, quality is discarded in favor of DIVERSITY and most people don’t give a damn. This PC crap is rapidly destroying what it claims to advance.
In other words, “WHO THE HELL CARES?”

"I don't get it -- we keep telling the country that it's homophobic and racist, and it keeps tuning out?!?"

Back during the Occutardation astroturf crap, I don't recall any of those jackoffs complaining that the 1% include everyone on that red carpet. BTW< Chris Rock's remarks are pretty spot on.

The guy used to be funny when he could laugh at various caricatures of black culture on SNL. Now, he’s just an unfunny uber-racist himself.

How do they expect an audience when nobody’s ever heard of the movies being celebrated? I had never heard of the best picture winner (spotlight) until I heard it had won best picture. In fact the DiCaprio flick was the only picture nominated for best picture I had ever heard of. Who wants to spend three hours watching a bunch of narcissists congratulate themselves over a bunch of art house movies nobody has ever heard of?

DiCaprio got an Oscar? Didn’t know “Best Grunt” was a category.

Aside from the Chris Rock issue, has the Academy ever given its best-picture award to a film ("Spotlight") that ranked so low in gross sales (ninety-first!!!)? Has the award ever been given to a film that finished out of the top TWENTY in gross sales?

It's a joke, an effort to think they are "serious," when it's just another attempt to bash Christianity.

I’m sure many walked out. People walk out of the Oscars all the time. People who were nominated in one category tend to leave (win or lose) after that category. There’s a reason there’s lots of closeups of the audience early and lots of wide shots late, they keep a bunch of stand-ins in the wings to refill empty seats. They’re never going to SHOW people walking out for any reason, but it happens.

I have watched my LAST Oscar telecast.

I also have most likely paid for the last time to actually attend a movie.

I am tired of hearing how ‘Affirmative Action attitudes’ have to be stronger & higher than actual talent & for the movies to be entertaining.

I +haven’t been impressed with any movie that has been populated primarily by blacks in a very long time-—I am 76.

Will the NFL, the NBA & the MLB suddenly demand that whites have to have more positions on those teams? I doubt it.

The constant ranting about how racist all of us are is beyo0nd tiresome for me.

Affirmative Action is already filling up the TV screens & there hasn’t been one that I find worth watching. A sop to demands that do not have any talent behind them. Enough already.

I don't think they can blame it on Chris Rock. I think people have come to see Hollywood as very liberal and they know that historically the Oscars have been a platform for liberal preaching. In this election year of the outsider against the establishment, I think people simply tuned out the Hollywood lovefest orgy of self-congratulation.

Chris Rock was a disgrace and utterly disgusting; his whole "shtick" was one black, anti-white racist so-called "joke" after another. Fortunately I had a feeling this would be the case when he was chosen as MC and the "only black lives matter" crowd began whining and playing the Academy race card. I, like millions of others therefore intentionally recorded the entire broadcast so that I could fast forward through all of Rocks racist diatribes.

The decision makers behind choosing Rock to MC the Academy Awards show should be ashamed of themselves and fired! He denigrated the Academy, the actors and film industry people in attendance and the world wide audience at large.

To put it bluntly; Chris Rock literally "screwed the Academy Awards pooch" on live TV, broadcast around the world and turned the entire event into a back racist laughingstock! It was nothing short of shameful.
