ORIANI, Haiti (AP) â Only shriveled carrots and potatoes grow in Carole Joseph's small vegetable plot. The family's chickens are long gone. She sold her only tools to buy food, then the wooden bed she shared with her children. The family now sleeps on the floor of their shack.
All that's left to sell are the pots she uses to cook over a fire pit, when there's something to eat.

” You make your bed and lay in it to sleep “.
The people of Haiti have made their beds and now reap the results that come with the support of a corrupt government.
Let them sort it out for it is not my problem. We have enough problems here at home fighting socialism so that same scenario won’t happen here.
They wanted it and they got what they wanted.
The Clintons? LOL They already milked Haiti for all the fake PR they could get.
” They never allowed anyone “home grown” to run anything so they never learned how anything worked. “
Ever heard of books? It’s amazing that these thingies with ink and paper have the secrets of how everything works.
No excuse.
Perhaps they should mine their gold
Why do they go to bed hungry? Why are they accustomed to privation?
If you try to start a business, all your merchandise is stolen overnight. If you get ahead in school, you might be poisoned by a rival student. If you plant trees for an orchard or to stop erosion, they will be taken for firewood when they are saplings.
This is the island of Hispaniola from the air.
Haiti is on the left side of the red border, the Dominican Republic on the right.
the voodoo factor
huge handicap
The Clintons are thieves (that was just a gimme...).
Haitians who came to the US legally are some of the hardest working people you will ever encounter. They fully understand coming to a nation where they have political, economic and spiritual freedom and opportunities.
Free food from USAID and many, many NGO sources result in farmers having no incentive to plant as they have few to sell to.
Primitive land management/farming techniques continue to strip the land of any viable farming use. Millions of seedlings planted back in the 80's/90's that were supposed to prevent erosion of soil were harvested for charcoal production (used by millions as the only cooking fuel) when they were 2-3 inches in diameter. This re-planting and then malharvest was continually repeated.
An agronomist friend in the country (European brother who had worked all over the world in third-world agronomy) was of the opinion (back in the 80's) that Haiti could feed themselves and the entire Caribbean basin if the land was properly managed. That goal was very achievable but it was impossible to break Haitians from the cycles of only planting sugar cane or seedlings for charcoal.
Haiti continues in a never-ending cycle of dependence-mentality, bone-crushing poverty that has spiritual roots.
How many years ago was the earthquake? (January 12, 2010) Yet there are massive areas that still looked like it just happened last week.
Haitians who came to the US legally are some of the hardest working people you will ever encounter.
REALLY?????? I had no idea for the hardest working people I ever encountered were the white class of Americans working as government financial slaves to feed, house, entertain and clothe several other races that don’t seem to have any work ethic.
UP is DOWN...DOWN IS UP!
Clinton screwed things up in Haiti. Only a Trump could fix that sad, poverty, corruption dominated land. And yes, he just might.
Nothing that I stated leads one to that conclusion.
After all they have a laptop, Internet connection, credit card, mailing address and the extra cash to pay import tax.
Really?
There are.
They just get suppressed by the french.
Haiti was the second country in the Western hemisphere to gain their independence (in 1804, after us); they can't blame France any more.
Haiti never has been independent of france. Pretty much everything there is still run by french NGOs.
Why do you think Baby Doc when to france when he was forced out of power and was welcomed there? He had been running Haiti as a french proxy.
Yes, Haiti is a mess. The picture you speak of is a "tragedy of the commons". There is no incentive to plant trees on land you do not own and you will get no benefit from.
"They actually do help their families back home by sending their money back home......"
*********
Absolutely correct!
Maybe they should rape at a lesser rate, and thus gradually reduce population.
Believe me, they have public libraries.
Books in basic education are publicly available at ALL libraries in the world. You just have to be willing to be educated.
That’s right (the commons analogy), and that mindset has spread like wildfire throughout the US population.
In reading about the French space program (which uses French Guyana as a Launchpad, due to its proximity to the equator), they specifically mentioned the lack of any desire for independence; I assume French citizenship protects them from some of the lower standards of living in the area (though theirs is low enough). The scattered islands that still belong to France don’t seem to have any movements, which could certainly find their way to the public via internet.
