MIT professor and intellectual Noam Chomsky attributes Donald Trump's success in the Republican presidential primary to "fear" and a "breakdown of society."
In an interview published Tuesday, AlterNet's Aaron Williams asked Chomsky for his thoughts on Trump's "surprising progress." After a second-place finish in Iowa, the billionaire has stormed to consecutive double-digit wins in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.
"Fear, along with the breakdown of society during the neoliberal period," Chomsky responded. "People feel isolated, helpless, victim of powerful forces that they do not understand and cannot influence."
Chomsky compared the political environment that's allowed Trump to flourish to the 1930s, when the U.S. was in the Great Depression. "Objectively, poverty and suffering were far greater," Chomsky said. "But even among poor working people and the unemployed, there was a sense of hope that is lacking now, in large part because of the growth of a militant labor movement and also the existence of political organizations outside the mainstream."
Trump and Hillary Clinton are leading in their respective primaries, but Chomsky demurred when asked who he thought would win the White House....

The irony is that Trump IS the establishment. He has been buying politicians for decades. He, now, claims to be an outsider. And he could shoot his own supporters and still gain supporters, according to his own words.

The First Depression, in the 30’s, had more hope in recovery because we were still a nation f laws, had strong nuclear families who cared for each other, bu t more importantly, active and charitable religious groups, churches and business charities. The growth of the labor movement and political organizations prolonged and worsened things. This man will soon be greeting his old friend Ted Kennedy (D-HELL) and congratulating each other on the work they have done to nearly eliminate the family, the church and decent business organizations. Bastard. Rot in hell.
This is typical leftist projection. When the masses see what’s going on and realize the game is rigged against them, then it’s their fault because they don’t recognize their superiors. That’s how leftists think, and they say it in this “now there, there” tone that literally drives me nuts.

Sagar, if I may offer a slight correction — it is not his followers he speculates on killing.
I'd substitute "anger" for "fear" but this far I agree with Chomsky. That traditional society has been systematically smeared, derided, and subverted to the furthest degree possible seems to me a fair description of the 0bama team and their fellow travelers' antics. I'd quibble about not understanding the forces responsible - we understand them very well - but even the most optimistic must admit we cannot influence them, and they're supposed to be representing us.
He apparently is fine with the establishment government when it comes to voting, which is 180 degrees out of his public stance on that sort of thing, but then Noam was never particularly consistent except in reflexive opposition to the policies of his country. He'd vote for Hillary. That says it all.
And why did society break down so much?
This guy was instrumental.
