An open carrier in Virgina is reported to have had his handgun stolen in Newport News, on January 29th, 2016. The location is listed as on the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue, and is said to have happened about 8 p.m. From dailypress.com:
The victim, a 37-year-old Hampton man, told police he was robbed as he walked across Jefferson Avenue to the lot at the Windsor House after visiting a friend at the Travelers Inn. He was wearing his handgun in a holster, open carry, on his hip, Eley said.
The man said he was approached from behind by two men, and one of them demanded his gun. The other then grabbed the gun from the holster and pushed him to the ground. Both men fled on foot southbound toward the trailer parks, Eley said.
This is only the third instance of an open carrier being robbed of his weapon that I have seen reported in the last 10 years. All were at night; one was in Miwaukee, where the robber approached the open carrier from behind; the second was in Washington StateOregon, where the open carrier was forbidden from having the firearm loaded while open carrying, and this is the third.
In an attempt to understand the dynamics of this case a bit better, I did some Internet research and used Google maps to see the location. It is at 6035 Jefferson Avenue. That is the address of Windsor House. You can see the parking lot clearly.
I wonder how dark it is in this location at 8 p.m. on January 29th, and if the robbers knew the victim was armed before they attacked.

One of many reasons for concealed carry. Should not need license for that.
Probably best to just give it up. Shoot on of the people people and pay, laws yes. Keep your cartridge in your shirt pocket and when the perps snip snap you you’ll be glad. Then draw your back up an Chase them Off. What a bizzaro world, a go ahead meme din.

Unless it is loaded and ready and the wearer is intent on protecting himself instead of making a statement, open-carry is just an invitation.
I would guess that they spotted him/his gun at the Traveler’s Inn and followed him from there.
That is a good way to put it. I don't condemn open carry. But I won't promote it either. I think concealed carry is good for the individual and the community at large.
My "intelligece sources" (Wal*Mart greeters) tell me they have only seen one (1) instance of blatant open carry since the law took effect January 1. And we are in a rural county...
I've taken advantage of the law by removing my jacket indoors a few times, but no one has seemed to notice.
Just not a big deal in these Piney Woods; but most TX carriers (and, there are a lot of us) exercise good common sense...
He who advertises gets customers. that is EXACTLY why no one but me and my wife know if I am carrying or not and she doesn’t always know. Better to be left alone than to be a victim.

Open carry is most certainly a political statement. But large numbers of people open carry all the time. The number of police that are shot and killed with their own guns has averaged a bit over 2 per year for the last decade.
There have been several cases where open carry has deterred criminals from attacking. Most criminals would rather not go against an armed man.
The more desperate the situation, the more open carry makes people a target. Open carry in a war zone is an invitation to be shot by a sniper. In Venenzuela, Police are murdered to get their guns.
In this case, deterrence did not work. Hard to say if it was because they did not know he was carrying, or if they had scoped him out before hand and decided to go for it.
I notice that nothing was mentioned about taking a wallet or cell phone. Maybe they got spooked by the gun, grabbed it and ran.
My 14 year old daughter (who shoots with me often) only recently became aware that Dad is usually armed. She was initially surprised. Mrs. Tenacious knows that in almost all cases I am carrying. On occasion she will point out certain fashion flaws associated with my attire selection. "That shirt is too tight if your going to take the .45."
Since my daughter's discovery, she has told me that it makes her feel safer knowing. I have cautioned her to keep it to herself.
