Did the robbers know the victim was open carrying before they attacked? It was very dark.

Open carry is a political statement, not a defensive strategy.

One of many reasons for concealed carry. Should not need license for that.

Probably best to just give it up. Shoot on of the people people and pay, laws yes. Keep your cartridge in your shirt pocket and when the perps snip snap you you’ll be glad. Then draw your back up an Chase them Off. What a bizzaro world, a go ahead meme din.

I would guess that they spotted him/his gun at the Traveler’s Inn and followed him from there.

Only concealed licensed Texans can legally open carry -- but the vast majority still prefer to conceal.
My "intelligece sources" (Wal*Mart greeters) tell me they have only seen one (1) instance of blatant open carry since the law took effect January 1. And we are in a rural county...
I've taken advantage of the law by removing my jacket indoors a few times, but no one has seemed to notice.
Just not a big deal in these Piney Woods; but most TX carriers (and, there are a lot of us) exercise good common sense...

I looked this up on a map and even though it’s not the dreaded “east end” (where I would go even in an APC), it’s still not a good section of town. I wouldn’t go there at night. And like others have said, open carry is advertising.

Situational awareness is your friend. Avoid dangerous areas, but always be aware of your surroundings and who might be a potential threat. Too many people think carrying a gun is all they need to protect themselves. Your firearm should be your last line of defense, not your first.

Obviously light enough for the perps to see that he was open carrying.

For the discerning person, open carry laws are nothing more than an accommodation to the person who wishes to carry a reasonable size handgun OWB with a cover garment.
"If the wind blows the wrong way, or you happen to sit the wrong way at a restaurant or wherever and you happen to flash some busybody, you're now covered under the law."
I call it discreet carry.
BTW, be careful when traveling. For example, a certain state to the west of me is generally very permissive about open carry and concealed carry, but carrying a handgun into any place that serves alcohol is a FELONY.
If you're going on a road trip, take the time to read and don't just assume. Especially combined with open carry, that kind of mistake could have an unwanted outcome...

I prefer concealed carry because it is a tactical advantage. Having said that, if one is going to open carry, then one should deport himself like a description I read once about Wild Bill Hickok- “He always walked into a room, looking from side to side like a mad old bull.”
