An open carrier in Virgina is reported to have had his handgun stolen in Newport News, on January 29th, 2016. The location is listed as on the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue, and is said to have happened about 8 p.m. From dailypress.com:
The victim, a 37-year-old Hampton man, told police he was robbed as he walked across Jefferson Avenue to the lot at the Windsor House after visiting a friend at the Travelers Inn. He was wearing his handgun in a holster, open carry, on his hip, Eley said.
The man said he was approached from behind by two men, and one of them demanded his gun. The other then grabbed the gun from the holster and pushed him to the ground. Both men fled on foot southbound toward the trailer parks, Eley said.
This is only the third instance of an open carrier being robbed of his weapon that I have seen reported in the last 10 years. All were at night; one was in Miwaukee, where the robber approached the open carrier from behind; the second was in Washington StateOregon, where the open carrier was forbidden from having the firearm loaded while open carrying, and this is the third.
In an attempt to understand the dynamics of this case a bit better, I did some Internet research and used Google maps to see the location. It is at 6035 Jefferson Avenue. That is the address of Windsor House. You can see the parking lot clearly.
I wonder how dark it is in this location at 8 p.m. on January 29th, and if the robbers knew the victim was armed before they attacked.

“”Yes, oblivious will miss, understand???.””
Well, that certainly clears it up????
I’m afraid there is a FReeper behind that account that is missing some thumbs.
“”Iâm afraid there is a FReeper behind that account that is missing some thumbs.””
I just hope he’s sitting safely in his own home and not on the road....
I looked this up on a map and even though it’s not the dreaded “east end” (where I would go even in an APC), it’s still not a good section of town. I wouldn’t go there at night. And like others have said, open carry is advertising.
This is true. Open carry is a deterrent in MOST situations. Thugs for the most part want easy money, they don’t want to risk being in a gunfight they might lose. While I choose to still carry concealed here in Texas, I can see a few advantages to open carry. Certain precautions should be taken, though. A good retention holster could be considered, and if suspicious looking characters approach maybe putting a hand on the grip.
One of the advantages of open carry that can hardly be denied is the speed of deployment.
Yes, advertising works both ways.
Rattlesnakes rattle, poison frogs are brightly colored, etc.
That's tagline material.
The first rule in the world of Security is:
Do not reveal your defenses, it only invites challenge.
I like you because you are unintelligible.
Maybe in “Security”, you are correct. But in the wider world defenses are displayed ( and sometimes bluffed) to deter attack.
The May day parade was not just for domestic consumption.
Displaying the ability for defense does not generally invite attack; it usually deters it.
Obviously light enough for the perps to see that he was open carrying.
At least, after they attacked him.
"If the wind blows the wrong way, or you happen to sit the wrong way at a restaurant or wherever and you happen to flash some busybody, you're now covered under the law."
I call it discreet carry.
BTW, be careful when traveling. For example, a certain state to the west of me is generally very permissive about open carry and concealed carry, but carrying a handgun into any place that serves alcohol is a FELONY.
If you're going on a road trip, take the time to read and don't just assume. Especially combined with open carry, that kind of mistake could have an unwanted outcome...
Don’t confuse you and your sidearm with an Army.
I noticed something at a gun show many years ago. Lots of people carrying handguns in holsters and had no desire to buy, trade or sell them.
They were simply walking around showing off what they had. It’s called exhibitionism.
“Hey buddy, nice pistol! Want to sell it?”
“Oh no, it’s not for sale!”
If I carry a handgun to a gun show rest assured I am in the market to buy, trade or sell it.
In public, I prefer a very discrete carry.
I'm thinking of a 110lb woman pumping gas late at night and a rapist one pump over contemplating making her his next victim.....until she turns to hang the pump nozzle exposing a sidearm holstered on her belt.
It can indeed be a deterrent. If a person chooses to carry openly, they should always...always keep their surroundings secure. Never ever let anyone walk up within 25 feet of you without you're eyes locked on them.
It can happen to anyone...even officers. Daren Goforth here in Houston was pumping gas in his patrol car. A man walked up behind him and emptied his pistol.
The Great State of Virginia needs Constitutional Carry.
Well said.
And good to remember, too, while growing older and watching the paint and veneer peel off of polite society.
I'd much rather be invisible than make myself a target of opportunity.
