In the staunchly pro-military state of South Carolina - where the next Republican primary will be held - the issue of Donald Trump's draft deferments is likely to be central
As the US presidential election reaches the pro-military state of South Carolina, the Republican front-runner Donald Trump is set to become embroiled in a new controversy: the story of how his bony feet kept him out of the Vietnam War.
The southern state is home to eight military bases and 58,000 veterans, and 25 per cent of those expected to take part in Saturday's primary vote for the Republican nominee are either serving or former members of the armed forces.
Mr Trump, who has led polls in South Carolina since July, received a deferment from the Vietnam draft because he had bone spurs in both heels....

What is an assertation ?
looks like you were in diapers when Trump was dodgng the draft.
What gives you that image ? Can you provide a definition of dodging the draft that does not include Cruz ?
Please provide proof for your claim which sounds like fabricated BS. Was there a draft in 88 when Cruz was 18?
There was certainly a draft when Rafael Cruz Sr went to Canada and took on Canadian citizenship. There was no draft when Rafael Cruz Jr crossed the border and deferred choosing to serve in the US Arned Forces.
You have been proven incorrect on everything you have posted.
If you don't like being challenged on your inaccurate posts, stop posting Snowflake!
I have decided that from now on, I will challenge any Trump poster on their bleats of "liar" and their wildly inaccurate negative assertions against Cruz.
Thank you for your good work. Not sure you can convince any of the Trumptards with facts. Good luck though.
Now you want me to watch some Trumptard's 90 minute YouTube video and debate that whack job's video?
Are you really that dull or lazy, that you can't actually debate yourself?
Well I guess you aren’t all that interested in facts that don’t fit your preconceived notions.
So now you’ve called me a coward, a snowflake, dull, lazy and all I’ve called you is a jackass. I guess you’re ahead. Another proud Cruz supporter!
As I said last night at 1:00 a.m. ...some of us have lives.
A medical deferment to be considered pejorative?
Yep - a MEDICAL deferment, as described in the article and excerpt.
I doubt it...
I was a New Zealander and in the US military and I didn’t have to become an American citizen...
I could have stayed in until I retired as a New Zealander...
However I did get naturalized while I was in...
soon after I immigrated here my birthday was pulled for the draft...
If I was a man I would have had the option of go in the military or leave the country...
but I am a woman...
there has never been a requirement that military members be an American citizen, born or naturalized...
Not unless you would have retired before 1988 or so. That is how it used to be but they changed it in the late 1980s and my friend was effected by it.
“Individuals who enlist in the military and are non-citizens, are limited to one service term. If non-citizens become U.S. citizens then they are permitted to reenlist.”
Immigrants in the US Armed Forces
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/joiningthemilitary/a/Immigrantenlist.htm
No it was not..
I don’t care what you claim your friend told you ..
I became an American citizen in 1975 not because I had to but because I wanted to...there was no policy that forced foreign born soldiers to be naturalized to reenlist...
When I got out in late 1979 the policy was still the same...
You seem to be suggesting that Reagan made foreign born soldiers become American citizens and then Clinton changed it back...
The new law if there was one would have a name, number, date...what is it...
Yes Canadian citizens and other foreign nationals could serve in the US military during Nam...I did...
If they were living here they were drafted into the US military...
There are many foreign nationals serving today...they do not have to become American citizens...
and yet you had no reluctance in that area to vote for Romney a TWO Time DRAFT DODGER...
Romney wasn’t a draft dodger. And he’s a hell of a lot more Conservative than Donald Trump.
I am not suggesting anything. I pasted a link explaining the rules as they now stand, read it. The link says it was updated in 2014, so apparently that is still the case. You can do your own research from there if you care to. It is a rule now that after the first enlistment you have to become a US citizen. The change was made in the late 1980s. I doubt that Reagan had anything to do with it. Congress is responsible for immigration and naturalization laws/regulations, not the president. I don’t really much care if you believe me or not.
Missed where I supported Romney?
If you have Post where I ever supported Romney I would love to see it because you are full of shit.
Some of were in the military at the time being mocked by draft dodgers like Clinton and Trump.
When were you in the military?
I swear these people act just like liberals. Accusing Cruz of lying, and then demanding you to search the internet and find the lie. And now they’re saying there’s nothing wrong with government funding for Planned Parenthood as long as it isn’t spent on abortions. And now Cruz isn’t a US citizen, but dodged the draft anyway. I have had more intelligent conversations with drugged out hippies than with these Trump supporters.
