WSJ: Ford To Double Mexican Plant Production

Published reports are saying that Ford plans to build a new auto plant in Mexico, with plans to more than double production there

Ford plans to build a new assembly complex in San Luis Potosi and expand an existing facility near Mexico City, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The Journal says the Dearborn, Michigan, carmaker will add 500,000 units of annual capacity there, beginning in 2018. That would be more than double last year's production in that country. The newspaper cites unnamed people briefed on the plan.

Costs for the project likely will exceed $1 billion, people familiar with the details said, with factory construction beginning later this year. It follows a $2.5 billion investment Ford announced last spring to build an engine and a transmission plant in Mexico.

This is why Trump mentions Ford Motor Co. during his rallies.

He is shaming them for it.

Something tells me Ford will sell their Mexican made trucks at the same price as “made in the USA”

Pretty dishonest move by Ford.

I’d like to know more about this. I saw a special a couple of years ago about the Ford plant in South America. It was a city, with all of their major subcontractors under the same roof. They reported great efficiency with this model, but said it could never work in the US because of the way union contracts were structured.

I would like to know more about the role unions play when it comes to restricting new ideas and innovations in the factory.

Ford customers will be paying First World prices for Third World goods.

The idea that consumers save even a single penny is a complete fallacy.

I see some contradiction in the reactions to this. On the one hand, people don’t want Mexicans coming here for jobs. On the other hand, they don’t want companies to operate in Mexico which could keep Mexicans in Mexico rather than sneaking over the border looking for jobs.

Also, if cars are made there cheaper, then Americans can buy them and drive to their new jobs created by a freed up from government regulation private sector.

there are a number of right to work states now.

one could slash and burn taxes an wages an still not hold a candle to India or Mexico.

I saw it with graphics departments in Manhattan.

workers in india paid ONLY when they were actively on a project, which on a slow day, could be 3 hours out of 8, an paid a third of the hourly rate.

you’re talking 24 dollars a day to 200 a day.

the work is AWFUL and the bankers spend more hours fixing the final product than it originally took to create, but they dont get paid by the hour.

I won’t be buying another Ford. Already wasn’t going to buy another Chevrolet or Chrysler after cash for clunkers.

Well . . . the southeast . . . we appreciate BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota, Honda, VW, Nissan, Kia, Hyundai and whatever other mfgs. have located plants in our region.

How about Mexico start their own car company and employ their own people???
How about Ford keep their plants in the US and hire OUR own people???

That way, both wins...

The thing that kills those jobs is the Unions. Period. Still, the contradiction with immigration and jobs is very interesting.

According to the article, the plant in Mexico is for compact cars, not trucks. The Ford Focus will be produced in Mexico, and production will be shut down in the U.S.

There are some folks here on FR who are very familiar with how the auto manufacturing business works, and they have an interesting perspective on it. One thing I've read from several folks is that Federal regulations for fuel efficiency and for vehicle safety have gotten so onerous that the cost of producing compact cars in the U.S. makes them too expensive for the buyers who are in the market for compact cars. For example ... someone who can afford to pay $28,000 for a compact car is going to pay $29,000 for a half-decent mid-sized car instead.

I would take the trade if it meant no illegals pouring in ... but that’s not the case ... we get mass illegals AND our manufacturing base keeps abandoning us ...it’s a no win for us ... Trump is right

Is there a Volvo plant here?

I think you’ve got it covered on the rest. GM and Ford pulled out of ATL some time ago.
