Windham, New Hampshire (CNN)The day after winning the Iowa caucuses, Ted Cruz issued an apology to Republican rival Ben Carson for falsely telling Iowa caucusgoers that the retired neurosurgeon planned to quit the race, calling it a "mistake."
Cruz said in a statement Tuesday that his campaign staff saw a CNN report that Carson was dropping out, although CNN had not characterized Carson's actions that way.
"Last night when our political team saw the CNN post saying that Dr. Carson was not carrying on to New Hampshire and South Carolina, our campaign updated grassroots leaders just as we would with any breaking news story," Cruz said in a statement first shared with CNN. "That's fair game. What the team then should have done was send around the follow-up statement from the Carson campaign clarifying that he was indeed staying in the race when that came out."

What ownership, he blamed others. Good grief something that important should have been checked and doubled checked. Too convenient by half. He got caught cheating.
Nah, go Rubio. With Cruz, you'll get mailers sent to you grading your attendance at church. Lolz
I didn’t know Trump was dropping out. I am concerned for him because others are saying Trump is running a lousy campaign.
So what happened to “suck it up, Carson”?
More like getting caught with your pants down to your ankles and having no choice. Couldn't like their way out of it.
ah, after romney and McLame, i’m sick of the gentleman loser attitude.
I want Trump or Cruz to win and I dont care what tricks they use besides physical violence and, well, physical violence
and no intimidating raped women.
the other side is SO SICK and DEMENTED (read Bernie’s college sex essay) that a little deviousness i can live with.
“Seen a lot of Cruizers post blaming âdumbâ Ben Carson voters”
Now it’s time for them to pivot to how amazing Cruz is for apologizing for something they said was an awesome move that Ben was just whining about.
Carson and others should probably look into suspending their campaign. Ben is a nice guy but has no chance of winning
Why? It is the primary and there are others to vote for. If Cruz makes it as the nomination he can count on me as well as any other could if they are nominated.
“I like him MORE for this but thereâs NO WAY he didnât know what was going down.”
He seems to never know what the hell is ever going on, does he?
So let me get this straight, CNN reports it Cruz campaign parrots it based on new reports. Cruz then comes out and apologizes on his staffers behalf (owning up to others actions in his name) yet did it on purpose? I got that right?
I admire a man that owns up to a mistake and rightfully apologizes with no spin. I just don’t understand society today but not surprised. It comes to a shock to some that live in a Country where people make excuses and place blame that someone would actually apologize for a mistake.
Team Cruz spent all day telling us this was a nothing burger. Why is Cruz apologizing for it now?
Cruz is the most hypocritical, sleazy candidate in the race.
Hie own father ought to have talk to him about ethics.
I think Cruz should apologize to the rest of us for being dumb enough to believe anything on CNN. He and his team trusted them as a news source and didn’t check the facts before passing on the info? Really? All of us here are smart enough not to trust CNN.
Didn’t Cruz learn anything after falling for McConnell’s lies? I’m disappointed.
Makes the Cruz supporters feel better, I guess. The country is not going to vote for Cruz or Rubio, y’know.
Cruz is running his campaign like every other deceptive career politician scumbag that’s ever been elected. Hope his ardent supporters are ready for 4 years of continually excusing his lies and weasel words if he wins. I’ll vote for him in the general, but my expectations after these last two weeks are at the very bottom of the barrel at this point.
There is no way that I will ever believe that Cruz didn’t think he might be a Canadian citizen during all of these years.
Just no way.
Cruz is sounds and acts like phony televangelist.
Oh, please. The Cruz campaign got caught and proven wrong with irrefutable evidence.
But since they are so high class, did the Cruz campaign verify the information with Carson personally before spreading the rumor to all their precinct managers?
I saw CNN, too. They certainly implied that Carson quit.
He went to Florida and was going to have a big announcement.
I’m not sure what else that could be — what, announcing he got a change of clothes?
