Trump: I'll work with Democrats
The Hill ^ | 26 Jan 16 | Jesse Byrnes

Posted on 01/26/2016 9:45:02 AM PST by elhombrelibre

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is stressing his bona fides as a dealmaker who'd be able to enter the White House and work with congressional Democrats to hammer out agreements.

"I think I'm going to be able to get along with Pelosi — I've always had a good relationship with Nancy Pelosi," Trump said Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," referring to the House minority leader.

"Reid's going to be gone. I've always had a decent relationship with Reid," Trump said, referring to Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the Senate minority leader. "I always had a great relationship with Harry Reid."

Trump said he thought he'd get along with "just about everybody," including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), likely to be the next Senate Democratic leader, who Trump said he was "close to ... in many in ways."

He has said the right things on the broad issues of immigration, national security, trade, jobs, common core & other things. Not enough for me.

He will have to negotiate all of those issues. What is he willing to give in order to get? What is up for grabs? What is off the table? If dem support for a “really, really good deal” regarding immigration hinges on his support of another nanny state policy, will he take the deal?

For instance, I don't wake up on morning to hear him say that even though he believes “The government has no business dictating what types of firearms good, honest people are allowed to own,” he gave in on this one small thing because what he got in return was so much better. It's a really good deal!

What am I willing to sacrifice? It is a question we all answer based on what we believe.

IMHO, NONE of the things that MUST be done to save our Republic from eventual, final destruction are NEGOTIABLE.

Trump is a more-or-less-sincere patriot (even if he is far too narcissistic to be sincere in more general respects), but not the kind of patriot that we need.

Trump is a nationalist, but we need a nationalist who is a Constitutional originalist. Trump is a populist, not a republican. Our nation's Framers LOATHED populism, since it is the lynchpin of unbridled democracy--and our Framers LOATHED such democracy because of its inevitable corruptions (for example, negotiations of non-negotiable matters concerning the CONSTITUTION).

In short, if you think that our nation is so far gone that Cruz cannot fix our problems, then I would respond that it is way too far gone for Trump to fix the problems.

Remember: You are supporting some who has lavished praise on Obama and Hillary for their outstanding leadership. My goodness, Trump can't spot the worst political monsters in American history. And you want Trump as your POTUS?

Well Scott, that’s your problem isn’t it? How much time did you spend walking the streets, knocking on doors, talking to people against McAuliffe?

Democrats won’t work with him.

I respectfully disagree. Democrats have never been challenged in the media the way Trump will challenge them. That is the game changer in this election. All other Republicans lack this skill set. That was the point of Andrew Breitbart...this is a war. You have to take your cause to the people. Mitt Romney did not want to go on “the shows”. He did not interact with the people. Republicans are seen as folks that “never want to get their hands dirty”. Thurston Howell III Republicans. Tough to go to war with that.

Take it for what it is...a war. Trump calls it what it is..a war.

On the surface it's troubling, unless you know Trump the businessman. When Trump says he'll "work with someone," it's on his terms and as a winner. The Dems have never encountered a winner. All our guys lose

Crap. This isn't business. There are times were deals aren't possible or desirable. Take Planned Parenthood. Trump says he is against funding it. The Democrats want it funded. What is the deal he would work on that? Common Core. Trump says he wants to do away with it. The Democrats want to keep it. What kind of deal will be work on that? Syria and Iraq. Trump wants to send in the troops and take the oil. A lot of folks in Congress aren't thrilled with going back in. What is the compromise there? What would those deals look like?

Shows how ignorant you are about business matters, and why specifically we need someone like Trump in there who knows how to win. “Working” with Pelosi has always been a loss because people going in didn’t INTEND to win.

You sir, are on the old Cruz Kool Aid. Enjoy. Comes in all flavors.

Had not thought of that one. Rush started to jump on it, I think read some e-mails, and then backed off a little, concluding that everything Trump says about deal making involves “winning.”

A long time ago I read a terrific book on real estate negotiation called “Winning Through Intimidation,” and one of the main points to winning was that the things the enemy throws up to kill a deal must be treated as “points to deal with” not hurdles. It all goes to the mental framework: I’m going to do a deal here, and I’m going to win. Republicans are so puppy-trained to losing because they’ve NEVER had someone go in with the intention of winning-—just not losing too badly.

It is all business. As Coolidge said, “The business of America is business.”

So, how do you do away with Common Core? Easy. Trump goes in wanting to dismantle the whole DoEd. He walks out with a “small part,” ending common core. Victory is where you START. Part of the problem with the Republicans is they always start at their final, last-ditch position and end up far worse.

Reagan did deals all the time. In 1986, he agreed to tax increases in certain areas to preserve the overall tax rate cuts. With Gorby, he was willing to give Gorbachev EVERYTHING HE WANTED, except SDI. Gorby stupidly walked away and lost everything.

“And Newt Gingrich (self avowed rigid conservative that he professes to be and much ballyhooed here by some at FR) sat on a couch with Nancy Pelosi,\. Your point?”

Did he donate to uber Liberal campaigns?

Not a Cruz guy -- not an anybody guy as of yet. But definitely not a Trumpbot.

To my knowledge, Cruz has not announced that as President he'll be able to "work with" the Democrats.

Drink up, cultist.

Unlike most of the loudmouths here, I do not discuss things I am not familiar with. I do not live in Virginia and am not familiar with your problems, therefor I will not walk into a gotcha trap. Now if you want to discuss Florida politics, go ahead.

I sure don’t want an ineligible Canadian who lies about the Constitution and infers things that are not true, just to take a smack against the coattails he’s been riding for months. Snakes do that.!
