Poll: Evangelicals flocking to Trump

Donald Trump's outreach to Christians is bearing fruit, if results of the NBC News/Survey Monkey weekly online tracking poll out Tuesday are any indication.

Among white evangelical Republican voters nationally, Trump earned the support of 37 percent, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, whose father is a pastor and has played a key role in recruiting faith leaders to support his son, is at 20 percent. In the same survey conducted the previous week, Cruz registered 9 percentage points higher. Below the top two contenders, Ben Carson earned 11 percent among evangelicals, and Marco Rubio took 10 percent.

The Manhattan business mogul, who is Presbyterian, made headlines throughout the course of the past week for his various interactions with fellow Christians, including a stop at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, last Monday. Delivering the weekly convocation address, Trump caused a stir when he made reference to a book in the Bible a "Two Corinthians," rather than the usual nomenclature, "Second Corinthians." (Trump later claimed that it was written that way in his notes, and besides, his mother was Scottish and would have said it that way.)

Trump also attended a Presbyterian service in Muscatine, Iowa, on Sunday, at which the pastor made reference to the ongoing immigration crisis, a central plank in the Republican's campaign, and humility, in general. "I don't know if that was aimed at me, Trump said later.

The poll's overall week-to-week standings show little shift with Trump leading the field at 39 percent, Cruz at 17 percent and Rubio at 10 percent. No other candidate received double-digit support.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton's advantage remained in double digits, at 51 percent to Bernie Sanders' 37 percent.

The poll was conducted online from Jan. 18 to 24, surveying a national sample of 9,690 adults, including 8,215 who indicated that they are registered to vote. The poll included 2,327 Republicans and 2,780 Democrats with margins of error of 2.8 percentage points and 2.2 percentage points, respectively.

Satan must be laughing. Trump makes Christians look like idiots and acts like the liberals stereotype of the ugly Christian, without any serious evidence he is saved. Let's see him disavow and sell off his casinos, repent for his infidelities and sleazy behavior, and offer more than empty words for the pro-life position

How about this: when he comes to your church, you can deny him communion.

Not all Evangelicals are suicidal. Not all Evangelicals appreciate "pathways to legalization", as a reward for invading our country. Not all Evangelicals fail to recognize overt pandering to CoC agenda and the Wall Street globalist donors feeding on that agenda.

If some of these holy Christians on this Forum were to be rushed to the hospital in critical condition, they'd wake up long enough to haughtily reject the Jewish ER doc.

Jews don’t believe in Christ’s divinity. You may have a point.

“...without any serious evidence he is saved.” “He has a lot of making up to do.”

I am a saved Christian, too, but that doesn’t make either you or I the judge of what “making up” Trump or anyone else has to do for God. That is between him and God, and sorry, but it is NOT between him and America.

I think the self-righteous, I'm more Christian than you types who act like they can see into Trump (or anyone's) soul make Christians look terrible.

I wish The Perfect Council was more comfortable with their own humanity. Alas, they sit on Earth in pious judgment of all things 'not Christian enough' Tell me how that attracts the masses, not only to Christ's message, but politically? It does not.

What a excellent post, these self righteous judges of lesser Christians are nothing like Jesus. I would rather take advice from humble lost souls than these self identifying perfect religious people, I won't call them Christians because I doubt they are.

Christians for Trump are far from stupid. They have been stabbed in the back by so called conservatives time and time again. So what the hell. Why not give him a shot. The idiots we put in the house and senate voted to fund planned parenthood. The media and both parties will Palinize Cruz and he won’t stand a chance in the general. Trump will take them all on

That self-aggrandizing, Christians are so much better than anyone attitude is PRECISELY what gives Christians a bad name to the larger world.

They're no fun on church committees, either!

Of course Trump, but I believe it'll be voting for Obama lite since his track record on what he supported is Bush/Obama-esque.

Are you kidding me right now?

Obama's track record:
Middle East Apology Tour
Deficit spending
Suicidal Rules of Engagement
Firing all well-trained senior military and replacing with gays and women
Muslim refugee resettlement in the US without vetting
Common core/Federal indoctrination
Muslim infiltration of all US security agencies
Transgenders in the military
Radical abortion spending
Environmental facsim
Western land grabs
Persecution of Christians
Homosexuality promotion
Transgender bathrooms
GLBT foreign policy and spending
Lavish taxpayer supported vacations (Trump owns his own resorts)

I could go on... trust me, Trump will not do any of these things.

And yes, it was an ironic sarcasm; nothing against Jewish people, who were Chosen and to whom Christians are grafted on. They are among the world’s foremost people of intelligence and creativity. My point was the hypocritical Christian chauvinism of some of the above posts.

I’ve been on many posts and haven’t much time now, but I know what you mean.

I sure would like to see more Christians here live it. Especially if they are supporting someone. Don’t make them and Christianity look bad.

Take care.

Even Presbyterian/Reformed theology has this in their Bibles:

I John 1:5-10

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Could end up getting forced on him, is the point, due to this "dominionist" meme.

Talking about it will only make it worse. Which he may not be able to avoid doing. One of many reasons why he's a weaker candidate than Trump, who keeps his discussion of Christianity very general, allowing everyone to read what they want into it.

You don't want a candidate who reminds voters of a tent revival preacher. Nor do you want to dwell on the weirder Left Behind prophecy talk. That's the downside of going after the evangelical vote to the exclusion of the plain old Christian vote. Each theological specific makes you more enemies than allies.

>>Even Presbyterian/Reformed theology has this in their Bibles:

Yes we do. The key is in the understanding of the timeline. Many think that every sin is confessed and forgiven individually. We believe that all sins are forgiven when you confess that you are a sinner. That’s what the verse you quoted actually says.

I agree that our sins - past, present, future - are forgiven and we are justified by the blood of Christ and saved from the eternal penalty of that sin. We are found IN Christ not having our own righteousness (which could never save us) but the righteousness of God in Christ by grace through faith. This is forensic justification.

However...the Apostle John was addressing believers in his epistle and I believe he was talking about our Christian walk of sanctification where the old nature and the new born again natures within us are in conflict. When we are admonished to confess our sins to one another so that we may be healed, there is a recognition that we will continue to battle with our sin nature but that God is faithful to forgive - keep on forgiving us - and cleansing us from all unrighteousness so that our fellowship with Him and others is restored.

We don’t lose our salvation when we sin because we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and redeemed when we come to saving faith in Christ. But what unconfessed sin in our lives does do is fracture our peace with God and brings His discipline so that we respond to His leading and get back on the path of holy living. I didn’t intend to turn this thread into a Religion Forum topic but Trump’s comment about never confessing his sins to God and asking for His forgiveness struck me as prideful and wrong headed. I readily admit I struggle with sin just as Paul did in his letter to the Roman churches. As I have grown in my faith, the struggle has eased but I could never say I don’t need God’s continuing forgiveness and cleansing.

Many of Trump’s public indiscretions are known and it would do a lot towards assuring me and others that he at least acknowledges he has erred and is humble enough to seek God’s forgiveness as well as from those he has wronged. I’m NOT talking about a Jimmy Swaggert kind of public sobbing confession but simply an admission he misspoke and does indeed seek God’s forgiveness in his life. That’s all.
