Poll: Evangelicals flocking to Trump

Donald Trump's outreach to Christians is bearing fruit, if results of the NBC News/Survey Monkey weekly online tracking poll out Tuesday are any indication.

Among white evangelical Republican voters nationally, Trump earned the support of 37 percent, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, whose father is a pastor and has played a key role in recruiting faith leaders to support his son, is at 20 percent. In the same survey conducted the previous week, Cruz registered 9 percentage points higher. Below the top two contenders, Ben Carson earned 11 percent among evangelicals, and Marco Rubio took 10 percent.

The Manhattan business mogul, who is Presbyterian, made headlines throughout the course of the past week for his various interactions with fellow Christians, including a stop at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, last Monday. Delivering the weekly convocation address, Trump caused a stir when he made reference to a book in the Bible a "Two Corinthians," rather than the usual nomenclature, "Second Corinthians." (Trump later claimed that it was written that way in his notes, and besides, his mother was Scottish and would have said it that way.)

Trump also attended a Presbyterian service in Muscatine, Iowa, on Sunday, at which the pastor made reference to the ongoing immigration crisis, a central plank in the Republican's campaign, and humility, in general. "I don't know if that was aimed at me, Trump said later.

The poll's overall week-to-week standings show little shift with Trump leading the field at 39 percent, Cruz at 17 percent and Rubio at 10 percent. No other candidate received double-digit support.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton's advantage remained in double digits, at 51 percent to Bernie Sanders' 37 percent.

The poll was conducted online from Jan. 18 to 24, surveying a national sample of 9,690 adults, including 8,215 who indicated that they are registered to vote. The poll included 2,327 Republicans and 2,780 Democrats with margins of error of 2.8 percentage points and 2.2 percentage points, respectively.

Of course Trump, but I believe it’ll be voting for Obama lite since his track record on what he supported is Bush/Obama-esque.

Believe me, I love what he says, but don’t like what he does and that’s what matters. This is beyond a new president making positive changes, but more about our society in a downward spiral. We need an awakening...

Here’s where he could go with good theology and escape the trap. He could say frankly that, as he reads the bible, this is premature and is waiting for an official personal presence of Christ, which would be absolutely unmistakable and nobody could argue with it.

This is the worst possible time to start discussing the finer points of the second coming. If Cruz got into that he'd lose another ten points. There are few subjects more divisive. Do you want the Catholic vote? The Jewish vote? The mainline Christian vote? Then keep that end times stuff - which even evangelicals can't come to any consensus about! - out of the campaign.

Thanks in advance.

Well, that is me exactly!
However, just because you sin, doesn’t mean you celebrate it. And that’s probably the “evangelicals” this article is refering to.

Christians ARE called to judge - despite the simple-minded Scripture-twisting the world encourages. It is a question of categories:

1. God alone is Judge over SOULS.
2. God has instituted human authorities - parents, government officials, employers, etc. - who may rightfully judge ACTIONS.
3. And *everyone* is called upon to judge IDEAS/BELIEFS - to be like the Bereans - because of the spiritual impact those ideas have on souls (#1).

It is precisely because we love sinners that we must judge wrong ideas, because those ideas are leading sinners to hell.

So cut it out with the hypocritical, self-refuting (think about it) charge of “self-righteousness”. I’m not claiming any sort of righteousness besides that offered by Christ apart from my own sorry actions.

But if you can’t judge a man’s conduct and beliefs, then you might as well go brain-dead and vote for Hillary. Or another Hitler for that matter. Do you not see the parallels between the zombie army of unthinking support for Trump and that of Obama in 2008, or Hitler in the 1930’s? Does the complete absence of rational defense of Trump’s worldview not bother anyone?

Your testimony is good. Back it with Scripture to increase its effect.

_____________________________________________________________

1 Corinthians 5:9-13

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people - not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.

But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”
_____________________________________________________________

We are called to judge fellow believers. By doing so, we hold each other accountable. We must be careful to remove our own planks first, of course.

If we get that kind of turn out, Trump will get 50% of the Iowa vote!

Could end up getting forced on him, is the point, due to this “dominionist” meme. Where the least painful way out is to tell the truth about what you DO believe. Which Cruz has already gotten into, so it’s not like it has all been hidden all this time.

The lack of Savior means perdition, and acceptance of Savior means salvation, period. We can’t be so arrogant as to say any doctrine gets anyone to hell or heaven apart from that. This isn’t world-wishes; this is straight up Bible.

With this latest endorsement of Trump by Jerry Falwell Jr., wow! The Donald has one hell of a lot of momentum in Iowa. Sure beats getting endorsed by Glenn Beck.

I agree. It would be a good start and make up for his ill advised admission that he has never asked God for forgiveness.

>>It would be a good start and make up for his ill advised admission that he has never asked God for forgiveness.

The actual words he used are a Presbyterian/Reformed theology thing. It doesn’t mean what you think it means. We repent, but understand that our past, present, and future sins are forgiven and forgotten by God. You don’t ask for something that has already been given to you.

A pastor can backslide just as easy as anybody. A pastor is not necessarily any closer to Christ than the people they serve.

Bear that in mind as you continue to preach to us here on FR.
