I usually enjoy reading Ann Coulter's columns thanks to her acerbic wit and gutsy grit. But, being human, she has flaws, among which is a penchant to suspend rationality when advocating for her flavor of the year in Republican presidential candidates. In past years, it was Chris Christie and Mitt Romney. Now, thanks mainly to his tough stance on immigration, it's Donald Trump.
This infatuation has caused her to write some ridiculous things about the eligibility of Ted Cruz for the presidency. Her use of the term "naturalization" is, frankly, unworthy of her status as a law school graduate. A recently published article from the Harvard Law Review holds that: "All the sources routinely used to interpret the Constitution confirm that the phrase 'natural born citizen' has a specific meaning - namely, someone who is a U.S. citizen at birth with no need to go through a naturalization proceeding at some later time." Cruz meets this requirement.
There are only two paths to citizenship: automatically at birth, or after one's birth through some legal process such as immigration and naturalization. The plain meaning of "natural born citizen" is understood to be a person who was a citizen "naturally" by reason of birth, as differentiated from obtaining citizenship later in life. In 1790, the First Congress passed a law providing, "And the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens."
Newton Schwartz, an 85-year-old lawyer, has filed a lawsuit in a federal district court in Texas challenging Cruz' eligibility. Schwartz told Bloomberg News that, while he's not linked to any particular presidential campaign, he will probably support Democrat/Socialist Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Nice company you're in, Annie!
Legally, this man has no "standing" to file this action. Only another presidential candidate could do so. If Trump actually thinks Cruz is ineligible, let him file suit and request expedited consideration which, along with any subsequent appeals, would surely be decided on an emergency basis. Otherwise, let's move on to real issues!
I heard her insanity the other night. She used to be entertaining and cute but now she is shrill, bitter and annoying.
That's complete BS btw.
The SCOTUS has repeatedly espoused the opinion that a NBC is a person that was born within the allegiance and the dominion of the sovereign- born in the country IOW. This is repeatedly held up in United States v. Wong Kim Ark opinion and is also stated flatly in Justice Curtis's dissenting opinion in Dred Scott.
What’s ridiculous is anyone on either side claiming it’s settled. It’s not, and anyone who says they know how the Supreme Court would rule is a liar.
Funny that both objections so far come from Trumpets. I thought you folks were 100% sure that Don will win this going away? How many more will there be?
She’s just a poor man’s Laura Ingram. ;-)
Chomi Prag, a Wisconsin attorney, will appear on the New Hampshire primary and has challenged Cruz’s eligibility to be president. If the person has to be running to challenge Cruz, Ms Prag is running, therefore should have standing
I think she s gone bi polar.
"Adexposing how Trump has used eminent domain to bulldoze an elderly woman's home to create a limo parking lot" — Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) January 22, 2016
Over the years, Ann’s commentary has taken on a Northeastern twang. Unfortunately, that seems to color her political preferences as well. When you view the world through that lens, It appears to be difficult to focus beyond the very edges of flyover country.
I don’t answer for “you folks”, just me. I’ve said all along I think the courts would probably rule for Cruz, but it’s no sure thing. If I had to lay odds I would say 2 to 1 Cruz would win. However it would be a nightmare either way if Cruz was nominated. I believe some Democrat state officials would refuse to put Cruz on the ballot in key states, forcing him to go to court. With appeals, that could drag on and put the whole election into chaos. Gore v, Bush 2000 on steroids.
It will probably be moot in a few weeks anyway because Trump will have the nomination locked up.
That fact is that Cruz was a Canadian citizen until 1 1/2 years ago, when he was 43 years old. I don’t think that is what the founders had in mind as somebody they would want for the Presidency. Cruz himself is a good man but what happens when we get the same situation with a guy who is a radical and was a citizen of Iran until 2 years before an election? Will you still be good with it then?
Now, why should a little old lady have to fight to keep her house because someone wants to build a parking lot?
What does that say about someone who admittedly tried to buy the house (but she would not sell), then tried the eminent domain route?
What about her private property rights?
Ted Cruz’s ineligibility has nothing to do with Donald Trump. He’s an affront to constitutional conservatism as are his supporters.
Like Jim, the site owner?
Why would Cruz tweet a lie??
Thank you for getting rid of the video link as part of your post.
Well Ann doesn’t exactly have the best record choosing Presidential candidates... We were told over and over how Romney was very conservative... No need to say more...

John Armor Bingham (January 21, 1815 ââ¬â March 19, 1900) was an American Republican congressman from the U.S. state of Ohio, judge advocate in the trial of the Abraham Lincoln assassination and a prosecutor in the impeachment trials of Andrew Johnson. He is also the principal framer of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Did you know Ted Cruz is a lawyer?
