National Review's scathing indictment of Donald Trump will do very little to dissuade most Republicans from supporting him for the GOP presidential nomination, conservative pundit and acclaimed documentary filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza tells Newsmax TV.
"I don't think this is going to dent Trump's real support," D'Souza said Friday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."
...
"It is good for intellectual conservatives to weigh in on this. Their points are not entirely invalid. Also, National Review historically has had a role of, you may say, policing the right. Even in Buckley's day," he said.
"There was a John Birch Society, there were people who were anti-Semitic while claimed to be conservative and Buckley saw it as his job to say the fence is drawn over here, you're on the outside of the fence.
"So they're trying to play a little bit of that historical role, but of course the circumstances are quite different."

Well, getting things done could mean getting laws repealed. Cruz just doesn’t seem to be able to rally enough people to his side as Senator. Maybe that would change if he were President, of course, although he’d probably get even less cooperation than the hapless Bush did on his occasional conservative efforts.
You forgot, donating tens of thousands of dollars to deblassio, reid, hillary, how many other liberals?
Answer my question first and then maybe you can tell me what Cruz was doing. Truthfully now.
Ted Cruz - and to a lesser extent, Donald Trump - is a direct threat to the corrupt order that runs Washington, DC. With few exceptions, the Uniparty calls the tunes and there are only a handful of elected representatives who refuse to dance to it. Some of them agree with the orders, some are blackmailed for exploited weaknesses, many want to be "liked" by powerful people, and almost all are beholden to financial and political support from the machine. Unlike my two senators, Ted Cruz fits none of those categories.
Weak men naturally follow whomever they perceive as the strong horse, and while our weaker politicians lack the courage to lead an unpopular fight, they will sometimes follow when an improbable, strong Conservative like Reagan rises to power. Ronald Reagan was a cancer thrust upon the Republican establishment by a popular uprising of voters. Like Reagan, Ted Cruz has all the right enemies.
Cruz was stating neutral.
Just what we need. A person who ‘stands up’ to DC’s absolute worst corruption by stating neutral. (And before you go into the canned Cruz-supporter “You’re lying!” routine, it was MULTIPLE Cruz supporters who informed me that he remained neutral. They said he had taken a self-imposed pledge of neutrality, and they were very proud of him for honoring his pledge.)
Well, at least he didn’t donate to DeBlastholes, Reids, or other fine upstanding progressive candidates. OH wait, that was just doing business, right?
Government doesn’t create jobs, businesses do.
Yes, Obama is anti-American. Trump is pro-Trump, which at times may intersect with Americans’ interests, at times not (Kelo/eminent domain).
Agree.
Yeh I think we all know that. But don’t let it stop you from saying it once more. :-)
Trump is going to set the stage for job growth that no other candidate will do. His tax policy and plan to roll back regulations will bring job creation. In about 12 months from now you will get to see how it works when a businessman is in the Whitehouse instead of a political hack.
I didn’t say who I was supporting, just that Trump is a self-styled populist, but not a conservative.
So Cruz, who’s running on a slogan of standing up to DC, gets a pass for standing uselessly by while the DC Cartel criminally stole an election for Cochran because...Trump.
No thanks.
If elected, time will tell. Ronald Reagan was an actor and a politician, not a businessman, yet he created conditions for the most sustained period of economic growth in U.S. history. And he wasn’t a “hack politician.”
It really is not as simple as that. He may be a self-styled populist but he holds many conservative views. As far as your proclaiming that he is not a conservative... measurable more intelligent people than you or I have made the same claim, but if the free republic nightly caucus is accurate at least half the people who participated last night would seem to disagree with you.
Unlike Trump and Reagan I did not start out as a liberal. I have been arguing for conservative principals since I was in grade school. Two of my most valued possessions are letters I received from Ronald Reagan thanking me for my actions and support while I was in my twenties. You can claim that I am not conservative if you would like, but everyone who has ever known me would probably laugh at you. I know who I am and what I am and don't care that much about the labels others might want to attach to me.
I will say it again... I will be voting for whoever is chosen to be the next Republican nominee for President. All they really need to do to make me happy is not veto legislation sent to his desk to reverse the damage Obama has done and to pick conservative judges for the Supreme Court. Everything beyond that will be gravy.
I have some reservations about both Cruz and Trump and all of the other candidates as well. But they all are far better than what the Democrats will be nominating. A Democrat president will mean ruin for our country and our way of life. We need to keep that in mind at all times.
Close the border and stop the insane policy of allowing people that hate us into the country. You have a problem with that? You are worried about something like Kelo when your entire country is being given away?
In the last week I have watched Freerepublic morph into the National Review. Undermining and attempting to destroy the front runner, and promoting a candidate (Cruz), that cannot win the general election. This will guarantee a Democrat wins the White House. The purists and thumpers do not seem to care, that this will be the outcome. The Elites thank you.
Like Ted Cruz won’t do the same thing, and close the border? Ted did not donate to a parade of Communists over the past decade, as Trump has. You can trust Ted. You can’t trust Donald.
As WFB, Jr. said, “The best way to ensure the repeal of a bad law is to insist on its enforcement.” Same with politicians — if the American electorate hasn’t yet experienced sufficient pain, they’ll continue to elect massive government ‘RATS and RINOs, among whom there is no difference. One day, following enough destruction, they’ll “get it” and throw off the shackles.
After voting for Ford, Bush 41, Dole, Bush 43, McCain, and Romney, I won’t support loser moderates ever again. (I even marched in Nixon’s 2nd inaugural parade in zero degree windchill as a Navy midshipman, but had no choice in that show of “support.”)
Real conservatives only.
Same thing that was being said about Reagan in 1980.
I did not say I was against Ted. You interjected that. But certainly you can figure that business people give to politicians in power. You are not really that naive are you? Seriously, are you? If not, then you are being disingenuous by reaching for an irrelevant non-point.
It would be the same if I said Cruz had accepted large campaign contributions from people and that he could not be trusted because of that. We all know any candidate that can't fund their campaign with their own money has to take money from others and do what those contributors want them to do.
