The nation's capital is now under a blizzard watch, the first watch of its kind issued in advance of Winter Storm Jonas. Now is the time to prepare for Winter Storm Jonas, which is expected to kick into high gear Friday and pummel parts of the East through the weekend with heavy accumulations of snow and ice. Strong winds will likely add to the threat of power outages and may also bring serious coastal flooding along parts of the Atlantic coast.
The National Weather Service issued the blizzard watch late Wednesday morning for Washington, D.C., and nearby Baltimore. The watch is valid Friday afternoon through late Saturday night.
Earlier Wednesday, the first winter storm watches were posted in parts of Kentucky, West Virginia and adjacent states. Most of those are valid Thursday night through Saturday.

Washington, D.C. grinds to a halt. Republicans blamed.
They’re naming winter storms now?
What the @%!#$^ is with naming snow.
Just after the holidays we vacationed in the Orlando area. The condo there had the Weather Channel on the cable system. I was much surprised to find the Weather Underground filling the 4 to 6 PM shift. Weather Channel bought out Weather Underground a couple of years ago. How can you be Underground if you’ve been bought out by the man?
Due to 2015 being “the warmest year ever”.
They’ve been naming them for the past several years.
The Weather Channel has been doing that for a few years now.
A major reason why I quit watching them.
Here in Minnesota the cold air for the storm just came through. Lows were -10 to -15 for about 4 days straight.
They’re naming storms now?
It’s a Weather Channel schtick, not related to the NWS.
Naming winter storms is B/S. More hype from the “oh no, we’re doomed” global warming crowd. But just so I don’t fit in, I’m going to name every event in my life:
There was “Laundry Load Robert” yesterday.
And “Coffee brew Linda” this morning.
The afternoon forecast is for “Growler Refill Sam” down at the craft brewery.
The Weather Channel has been embarrassing itself for several years by naming winter storms. It obviously hasn’t caught on.
That’s what happens when media coverage of a storm becomes more important than dealing with the storm itself.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!
It’a alllllll about the drama.
Four Inches of Snow = Winter Storm Hubert
DirecTV dropped them in a dispute awhile back and picked up Weather Nation. I switched to that. More like The Weather Channel was when it first started up.
Just more white oppression set to descend upon Phillie, Bal’more, and DC.
Good thing Eleanor Holmes Norton fixed it so kids can go sledding on a hill near the Capitol.
Powder to the People!
Raised your mitten clad fist to the sky!
Thank god it’ll miss Minneapolis-St Paul.
I’ve had enough of winter!
Notice how every dinky weather event is now referred to as a 'storm'? We are currently experiencing a 'snowstorm' here in east Tennessee...might get an inch or two. Everything is closed.
Their use of ‘torcon’ cracks me up.
