âIt is true that after George W. Bush nominated John Roberts, I supported his confirmation. That was a mistake and I regret that,â he said.
But he insisted that heâd fought behind the scenes for a more reliable â and proven â conservative jurist, appellate judge Mike Luddig, for whom he had worked.

I believe it and without sarcasm.
Thank you for posting this. Roberts was not Cruz’s choice.
Mike Luddig was and would have been a great Supreme Court Justice.
Here is the pertinent endorsement of John Roberts in which Cruz praises both Roberts and the judgement of Tribe. LOL.

SCOTUS judges are often hit and miss. A lot of us thought it was a good pick at the time.
Nobody knew that Roberts would “grow” in office and earn “strange new respect”. We were all glad to get someone other than the rather dim, affirmative action nominee, Harriet Miers. As for the kind words for Larry Tribe, perhaps now Cruz understands that there is no decency on the left.
Most FReepers, including myself, were very happy with the Roberts pick at the time. We all got snookered.
Cruz is a snake, and a crappy candidate for lots of reasons, but this isn”t one of them.
RandPaul.com?
Wow, might as well post from Alex Jones.
I think Cruz would give us a much better selection of justices than the other candidates. The problem with the Bushes is that they were not lawyers and did not appreciate either the significance of their choices or the ease that potential nominees are able to disguise their convictions. I think Cruz understands that and understands the stakes. None of the other candidates have experience in the legal system except Christie and Christie is far too liberal to leave in charge of that.
Show me a single poster here that criticized the nomination at the time.
The prospect of Ted Cruz selecting the next three (or four) Supreme Court Justices is the single most compelling reason I have for voting for him.
I would expect Cruz to appoint justices in the mold of Clint Bolick.
I’m not big on conspiracy theories, but someone got to Roberts right in the middle of his writing the Obamacare opinion. You just don’t change your opinion in mid-draft of something that important like he did.
Roberts wsa dazzling when he testified. His knowledge of the case law and issues was Cruz-like. I don't think the nomination was the problem; it was that he was compromised in some way. Obama got to him.
