Trump Holds Lead in South Carolina; Cruz in Second as Bush Moves Up to Third In Contest

by Jan 17, 2016 Top StoryTrump Holds Lead in South Carolina; Cruz in Second as Bush Moves Up to Third In Contest

A post-debate poll of likely voters in South Carolina's GOP presidential primary conducted by OpinionSavvy for the Morris News Service/InsiderAdvantage shows Donald Trump continuing to dominate the contest, leading his closest opponent, Ted Cruz, by some 14 points. Jeb Bush has moved into third place, just 4 points behind Cruz. The survey was conducted January 15th by both IVR phone and mobile devices. The poll has a margin of error of 3.7%. The survey also shows that South Carolinians believe Trump won the debate held in North Charleston by a wide margin. 37% of the respondents who watched the debate declared Trump the winner with Ted Cruz coming in second at 22%.

When asked who they would vote for if the primary were held today, likely voters responded:

Trump: 32%

Cruz: 18%

Bush: 13%

Rubio: 11%

Carson: 9%

Christie: 4%

Fiorina: 3%

Huckabee: 2%

Kasich: 2%

Paul: 2%

Santorum: 1%

Undecided: 3%

Analysis by InsiderAdvantage founder/Opinion Savvy analyst Matt Towery:

"Trump leads in the poll among respondents who describe themselves as 'very conservative' but by only six points over Cruz. But Trump's lead over Cruz widens among those who say they are 'somewhat conservative'– he receives 33% versus 15% for Cruz and Bush. Trump led among those who said they were moderate but with Bush and Rubio receiving solid second place percentages. Trump led among all age groups but does better with the youngest of voters (40%).

"The poll confirms that Donald Trump is the force to be reckoned with in South Carolina. He has led in our prior surveys and his lead expanded a bit after the debate. Cruz, as expected, is giving Trump his closest challenge– albeit a somewhat distant one at the moment.

"Most interesting was Jeb Bush's leap to third place in the South Carolina contest. It has been my belief that one "establishment" Republican will survive to take on Trump and Cruz in South Carolina. Bush's lead over Marco Rubio is tenuous but it is nevertheless a lead. It may be the first glimpse of some momentum for the Bush camp. South Carolina has shown its willingness to go for the more "establishment" type candidate in some contests (McCain over Huckabee in 2008) but in recent years has grown far more inclined to support the more "populist conservative" type such as Newt Gingrich in 2012.

"As for the debate, Trump scored big with viewers in South Carolina leading his closest opponent, Cruz, by 14 points. When asked who performed the worst, Bush took 'the prize' with 27% and John Kasich receiving a dubious second place 17% for worst performance."

Defeat the man on the ideological playing field if you must, not this birther garbage.

Yep. Because nothing says ideological gravitas like “Trump is a NY Liberal. la la la”. It’s funny to see Cruz’s supporters ignoring his poo flinging.

This is best campaign since 1980. What’s going on now is healthly. It’s only 2 weeks until the vote and a good bash is fine. Let’s see who is the fittest among the candidates. We’re going to need somebody tough to defeat the rampaging Dem/MSM cabal. They certainly are not interested in Marquess of Queensberry boxing rules. We need a brawler to beat them. Let’s find one now in the primaries.

I also included that I don't think it's established yet, and whether it was a voting roll or just a roll used to verify addresses.

It's been ridiculed and denied by Cruzers, and they've cast doubts about the source. Take that part for what it's worth.

Bush has gotten his minibump from Graham sycophants. Not much more than that. Otherwise. No surprises

By Cruz’s supporters going to someone else or dropping out.

Oh my.

Looks like Trump has a lot more votes than the Lindsey Graham voters
who booed Trump at the conservative convention in SC on Saturday.

“Jeb is gaining on Cruz. Interesting.”

I think some of Jeb’s anti-Rubio ads have been quite effective; I though the Rubio-weathervane ad was devastating.

Nah. You can’t run a campaign constantly worried about who will “stay home.” As in football, don’t play defense. If Ted’s supporters care about the country as they say, they’ll vote to stop illegals and the Muslim immigration.

“But he is using his superpac firepower to destroy everyone that stands between him and Trump”

Which is a good thing, particularly since you point out Jeb can’t win anyway. So Jeb is taking the Trump/Cruz opposition off the table for free. Looks like Jebbie tip-toes will get to still play on the main stage for a while longer. Unfortunately for Jeb, like Hillary, the more people who actually see them, the more they don’t like them.

Unfortunately, i believe you are correct. That bit of toothpaste can’t be put back in the tube.

“Last I heard Breitbart’s article was ‘drive-by’, debunked. Is this a recent update? Do you have a link?”

You may have heard about it, but what about the great unwashed masses of GOP primary voters? Here’s what they think, and what they think is all that matters:

Must have been Lindsey’s endorsement.

If Bush is the nominee, I am done voting for republicans. No one wants him, yet he is now in third place? Something wrong with this picture.

LOL, they would deny the earth is round if it had anything to do with Cruz’s poll numbers dropping!

Trump haters had better take a look in the rear mirror.
Bush is gaining on Cruz.

While you are busy hating on Trump, Bush is getting close to overtaking
Cruz.

To me, citizenship is like a title in property law.

When determining a person's claim to title, a title search is done to ascertain and document the historical trail of title in order to legally prove ownership, to see if the title is clean or if there are any blemishes and whether or not that person's right to sell that property is free and clear with no liens or encumbrances against it.

Citizenship is a two-way street with rights and responsibilities much the same as with property ownership.

Whatever a person's "citizenship" is, whatever it grants claim to and whatever is required due to that claim, it all is determined at birth based upon that person's equal inheritance from three sources: Father, Mother and place/nation of birth.

Regarding eligibility for POTUS, we are essentially doing a title search on the candidates going one generation back to determine the legal quality of their claim to citizenship.

A Natural born citizen, as defined as "born in country to citizen parents", is as clean, blemish free and clear as a title can get. That person is a citizen of that country and none other. There are no other options.

So defined, a natural born citizen has received the exact same inheritance claim to citizenship from all three sources. That's a clear title!

Consider the case of born in Canada Ted Cruz. By law and nature, his title grants him two or possibly three potential claims to citizenship and two or possibly three claims against him.

That is NOT a clear title and the original, self-evident "Natural Born" concept is far from old fashioned as some would have US now believe.

Ted's American title has one or two blemishes and required the rule of law to legally remove it/them. His title could then be considered free and clear legally, but the blemishes are always there.

Trump, having been born here to citizen parents, has a clean American title and is thus eligible to be POTUS.

Neither Cruz, Rubio, Jindal nor obama were born here to citizen parents, so not one of them received a clear American title at birth.

Each had a "dirty" title that had to first be made clean by law in order to remove any and all existing and potential legal, not ideological nor emotional, liens and encumbrances.

They are NOT eligible to be POTUS.

Hey, I’m a Trump supporter too. But this forum isn’t about spreading lies. Until someone is able to correct me — Breitbart did a drive-by. If they did it on purpose and refuse to retract, they disgrace the name of Breitbart.

Jeb and the Establishment are using Cruz like a hammer on Trump.

Once they are done with Cruz then they will disqualify Cruz with a shopped Judge. Then slip in their boy Jeb.

Don’t fall for the Establishment trap.

If you think about it, granting NBC status to Cruz, Jindal, Rubio and obama is essentially like granting them a form of amnesty.

Amnesty transforms a person's citizenship, granting to them a claim that they had illegally taken for themselves.

This is "justified" due to their continuous open and notorious, adverse possession.

Illegal aliens are "squatters" taking advantage of "squatter's rights" while hoping we eventually cave and just legally give them the citizenship they have taken for themselves.

Ineligible to be POTUS, _resident obama is asserting "squatter's rights" by/while living in the White House.

Because the demonrats and their GOPe cohorts LOVE amnesty in all forms as much as they hate American nationalism, we gave obama two terms!

Now, along comes Cruz, Rubio and the rest demanding their NBC amnesty, too.

Who didn't see that coming?

End Amnesty Now!

Oh yes, this is a very logical way to look at it indeed.

I have to admit, I had never thought of the Amnesty metaphor, nor the Title Search. But they both track perfectly. Someone arguing in front of the Supreme Court would do well to flesh these out because several Justices just love hypotheticals and metaphors and would enjoy them.

What do you think though about how this all played out? After eight years of mass ignorance and the smearing as "birthers" ( like birchers or truthers ) I'm seriously convincing myself that given the Court makeup and agenda that we might just be better off without them taking a case.

America loses in almost every scenario unfortunately.
