One of the three winners of the record-breaking Powerball lottery jackpot in the United States became wealthy overnight thanks to the generosity of her boss, one of the American Jewish communityâs leading philanthropists.
Shlomo Rechnitz, a health care magnate who owns 80 assisted living facilities throughout California, purchased nearly 18,000 lottery tickets for all of his employees, one of which happened to contain the winning numbers.
The unprecedented $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot will be divided among three winning tickets purchased in Tennessee, California and Florida.
Each ticket is worth $528.8 million, lottery officials said in California, one of 44 states plus Washington D.C. and two U.S. territories that sold millions of Powerball tickets.
The winning numbers were 08 27 34 04 19 and Powerball 10, picked in a drawing on Wednesday night. The odds of having the correct numbers: 1 in 292 million.

Nice, but, I got a bad feeling this won’t end well.
I had the powerball but no other numbers on my ticket. Guess I should have bought 18,000 tickets. LOL.
What a great story! Occasionally I’ve bought lottery tix for family stocking stuffers - I think my son won $5 once but that was it. However, if you buy closed to 2000 tix, I guess your giftee has a better chance....
Very nice of this man!
Wow. That’s neat.
Thanks Nachum.
Read an interesting book one time where a rich guy goes through this town and needs help, no one will help him. When he finally gets out and back home he starts sending cash to all of the residents of the town, they destroy their lives with their new found wealth.
Good on Schlomo!
“Giving bonuses can reduce turnover.”
Unless this happens.
Cool story
Gambling is not condoned by Orthodox Judaism.
WOW how super-nice!
I wish I had a boss like that !!!!!!!
Gambling is not condoned by Orthodox Judaism.
But he didn’t gamble. He just brought presents for his employees.
And I would be willing to bet that he didn’t buy them himself, but had someone buy them for him.
Of course I wondered about the logistics of the buy. How do you buy 18,000 single lottery tickets?
Liberal big donations tend to cause issues around the world...a la Buffett, Gates, etc al.
How do you distribute them to all 18,000 employees in 4 days?
I had a little dreidel. I made it out of clay.
18,000 tickets
I wonder if the winner will say something antisemitic? I hope not, but that is one way this story can end badly.
Does the ticket seller share in the jackpot?
Is this a hoax?
