It's a cliche to say that democratic states can't function properly without an informed electorate. But itâs absolutely true. And this is why, heading into the 2016 election year, I'm nervous about the future. With Donald Trump leading the Republican presidential contenders, even many Republican die-hards are shaking in their boots.
But Trump isn't the cause, just the symptom. The deeper cause is a strain of anti-intellectualism that runs through the roots of American culture. And while this strain is found on both sides of the political spectrum (see some liberals on vaccines and chemtrails), it's mostly concentrated among religious conservatives on the political right. For those who espouse anti-intellectualism, conspiracy theories have the same clout as legitimate science, the opinions of non-experts are just as credible as those of the experts, and ideology takes precedence over the cold hard facts.
Phil Torres looks and sounds like a metrosexual pouf. Maybe that's why Salon employs him.
Poster boy for liberal elitism. Becoming more and more unhinged as Trump's staying-power is evident.
Forgot to add - this is an excerpt.
Ouch! That hurt. I, a former 4th grader, am offended.
Fox News hates Trump. Next....
Definitely a pajama boy.
I will cheer as the liberals heads explode and the exit the country if Trump is elected.
Did that fag jut call Trump a dumb-dumb poopy-head?
You can’t make this stuff up. What will it be next, Donald Trump belches at the dinner table?
Oh Phillie you’re just so hip and suave.
Oh good, Salon now has a comedy column!!
I didn’t want to point that out but it is true.
We are so used to LAWYER speak double talk with these politician we don’t know how to act when someone just SAYS IT!
Trump is doing pretty well for his first time while all the others are trained talking heads.
"What's most dangerous about Fox News, though, isn't its cynical use of Orwellian doublespeak, as in "Fair and Balanced" and "No Spin Zone," to conceal a conservative agenda. Nor is it the network's repeated failure to accurately report the facts. Rather, the most dangerous consequence of Fox News is that it discourages that most important form of rigorous curiosity called critical thinking."
Carter, Clinton, Obama - the great intellectuals of our time.
“Donald Trump talks at a fourth-grade level.”
That’s why he has at least 20% of your fellow travelers’ support, Phil.
Also, your god-king treats all Americans as fourth-graders.
Sad to say, most of the electorate today communicates at a fourth-grade level.
Trump is just being astute in acknowledging that fact.
Next will be that the Donald doesn't have a NY barbers license.
If you want to reach all Americans, you speak at a fourth grade level, exactly what Trump has done. This boob complains about anti-intellectualism. He considers himself an intellectual? The one thing you need to know about intellectuals is that they care more for their ideas than they do lives.
Actually, Trump uses his “4th grade voice” to attract democrat voters...word is he’s already pulling about 20% percent of them.
It’s the RINOs who tell you how to build a clock when all you want to know is the current time.
The dems, well, they just offer to give away new clocks to everyone, for your votes.
