Poll: 20% of Dems would defect for Trump
The Hill ^ | 01/09/16 | Sarah Ferris

About 20 percent of likely Democratic voters say they would buck the party and vote for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in a general election, according to a new poll.

The willingness of some Democrats to change sides could be a major problem for Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton this fall.

The new figures were released by Mercury Analytics, a research company with clients that include MSNBC and Fox News, as the result of an online poll and dial-test of Trump's first campaign ad.

A smaller number of Republicans say they’d vote for Clinton - about 14 percent.

Ron Howard, the company's CEO and a Democrat, said he expected Trump’s first campaign ad to have "little impact - or in fact negative impact" on Democrats and independents. But the ad actually resonated with Democrats more than he expected.

About one-quarter of Democrats said they "agree completely" that the ad raises good points, with another 19 percent agreeing at least "somewhat."

"The challenge to Hillary, if Trump is the nominee and pivots to the center in the general election as a problem-solving, independent-minded, successful 'get it done' businessman is that Democrats will no longer be able to count on his personality and outrageous sound bites to disqualify him in the voters' minds," Howard said, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The company surveyed about 916 likely voters this week. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.

Actually, there is useful anecdotal evidence and there is “not so much.”

So let me ask you: These gun shows that you visited -what states were they in?

You are used to using a link to participate in an online poll.

This is different. They are contacting people and essentially conducting an online poll the way they would a telephone poll.

It is debatable with is more accurate these days, phone vs “this type” of online poll.

Some folks say it’s more accurate because phone polling has fallen out of favor. The traditional phone type of polling has taken some hits as far as credibility is concerned over the last four to eight years.

I understand the dynamics, but I honestly can’t say which camp is right, this type of online poll camp, or the traditional telephone poll camp.

Depends on whether they’re going to vote for Hillary out of spite or write-in.

“How many Republicans will defect instead of voting for Trump? Do the numbers offset?”

Only if they would actually vote for Hillary.

Which I doubt. They’re just having temper tantrums.

“That just tells me that even the libs realize that Trump is more liberal than conservative.”

You mean those liberal policies that he is espousing are attracting democrats?

Liberal stances like deportation, a wall, banning Muslims, lowering taxes, increasing the military, and a national concealed carry?

Just today Carl Paladino on Neil Cavato stated in his NY state space, that is 80 pc rats of that he saw 75% going to TRUMP. Hitlery fatigue is setting in. If TRUMP can take this state in a general -then more power to him.

Carl Paladino was also positive he would knock off Andrew Cuomo (a very flawed candidate) in the 2010 gubernatorial election that featured a lot of statewide voters being disgusted with the DNC after the Elliot Spitzer "Client Number Nine" scandal, and the Anthony Weiner scandal.

He ended up getting 35% of the vote, which underperforms the typical GOP statewide candidate in NY.

There are several traditionally blue states that a guy like Trump might carry. New York is highly doubtful -especially given the fact that Clinton is also a resident and a former Senator.

If Trump is picking up 20% of Democrats you won’t see many detections. The rank-and-file GOPe will mostly rally around him, the GOPe elite will mostly glom on in the hopes of gaining some favor from a Trump Administration.

At a 20% crossover pickup, the only threat of the Dem winning the election would be from Webb’s increasingly likely independent spoiler run. But given that Trump’s popularity is based on his popularity/branding, it’s hard to figure out where Webb would draw more from.

“You mean those liberal policies that he is espousing “

No...more like Trump’s recent stances on supporting an “assault” weapons gun ban, abortion, gay marriage, and amnesty.

Yes, I know all Trump supporters say that was then, in the 2012/2013 election cycle, and this is now and Trump only espouses conservative policies now, but only dim people actually believe that. It is highly doubtful that EVERY single liberal policy position that Trump held for over 30 years and as recently as 2012-2014, somehow miraculously changed overnight and now he is a true conservative. Even the liberals aren’t fooled by that!

Jim Webb is going to end up playing the part of Zell Miller at the 2016 GOP convention in return for a high-level Defense Dept. post.

At the same convention (if the GOP has any sense), Chris Christie will give a prosecutor's speech summarizing all of the lies Hillary Clinton has told in her lifetime. If the Republican candidate wins, he deserves to be rewarded with the AG post.

“How many democrats viewed Regan as an alternative to Carter or Mondale”

You are talking about a totally different era and the majority of democrats were not so leftwing progressive at the time.

If and when Donald Trump is validated in his own mind as the most important human being on the planet (and therefore the universe), he will do whatever the hell he feels is in the best interest of this country. I expect that those who vote for him will be pleased by many of his decisions, and disappointed by many others.

:-)) the fact it is questionable over all gives cause to rejoice.

:-)) the fact that there is a possibility the victory would be just as sweet!

Go Trump Go Cruz

Carl also said that he is thinking of running for Gov. That he admits the fact should give a clue as to how great this might be. We shall see. Holding the breath until Nov. and results are known, written and verified.

It’s corrupt Mexico, BLM racist, the Free Trader frauds, lying corrupt MSM/networks, mass murdering drug kingpins, millions of illegals, Communist academia and the corrupt professional politicians who’ve put us into decline....And a few right here on this site.

This should not surprise anyone. The question is how many will he run away. I am not sure, I think it would be a wash really. I can vote for him if nominated. But I would be less than thrilled.
