DISTURBING fact about government workers shows Trump was right on this point all along…

It's a good thing Trump wants to rebuild our manufacturing base, because it truly has taken a hit. We've turned from a nation of builders to burger flippers.

To put in perspective just how bad things have gotten - there were more Americans employed in manufacturing in the months leading up to Pearl Harbor than there are today, despite the fact that the population then was a fraction of what it is today.

In that time, there was 1 person employed in manufacturing for every 10.6 people in the overall population compared to 1 person employed in government for every 26.1 people in the overall population.

Oh how things have changed. As CNS News reported:

Those employed by government in the United States in August of this year outnumbered those employed in the manufacturing sector by almost 1.8 to 1, according to data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There were 21,995,000 employed by federal, state and local government in the United States in August, according to BLS. By contrast, there were only 12,329,000 employed in the manufacturing sector.

The 2015 Federal budget spends an unprecedented $3.7 trillion which leaves us with a deficit of over half a trillion dollars.

Trump's plan to restore the manufacturing base consists of placing tariffs on Chinese goods and reducing our relatively high corporate tax rate which incentivizes businesses to set up overseas.

There's a huge opportunity to kill two birds with one stone here. Shrink the government, and when people ask where those former government employees are going to work we'll have some nice manufacturing jobs waiting for them.

It's time to outsource all gov telephone services to India, and fire all gov workers who claim they're "customer service".

So much for bringing jobs back to America.

It’s not only the size, but the intrusiveness of government. The bureaucrats feel that they have to justify their positions so promulgate more regulations to interfere with the conduct of a business. Our country has become a minefield of laws, rules and regulations which can be deployed by crazed bureaucrats seeking revenge and glory.

Putting the economics of our situation here in America aside; there is the problem of increasing and overriding government control of our lives on every level. Replacing industry with government employment is the goal of Socialism.

It would be interesting to know just how many government workers it requires to service one welfare recipient. It’s a fact that the requirement of “The Mark of the Beast” (government) is mandatory in just about everything an American citizen has to do to live. Unless we do something about it, it will soon be the difference between living or dying period. The loyalty oath required to be employed by our government means something entirely different than it used to.

we need a high-level assessment with next President of where we could eliminate govt jobs and give those to the private sector, if they are worth saving at all.

I’d start with TSA, where W folded like a cheap suit to expand federal employees by tens of thousands rather than private contractors.

You're looking at this from what I call the "Wal-Mart Perspective." You walk through the aisles at your local Wal-Mart or Target store and can't find anything that was made in the U.S., so you assume nothing is made in the U.S.

There's some truth to that, because the economics of using highly-paid American workers simply doesn't make sense when you're producing low-value, expendable consumer products that are sold in massive quantities and aren't intended to last very long. But let's look at a Wal-Mart store in the context of the things that still are produced here in the U.S. -- and maybe even produced in larger quantities than ever before.

1. A Honda Accord that is manufactured in Ohio is worth more than all of the merchandise in any single aisle in your local Wal-Mart store.

2. A John Deere harvester produced in Iowa is worth more than all of the merchandise in the entire store.

3. A Boeing passenger jet produced in Washington is worth more than the entire Wal-Mart store and the property where it is located, including the land, building, and utilities.

Those are things that need to be changed. Unionization of public employees is now and always has been insane.

Excellent suggestion!

It is time to outsource all gov telephone services to India, and fire all gov workers who claim they aree customer service.

Calls would be taken in less than 5 minutes, and it would save billions.

Doctors and Lawyers are almost all service providers. It would also be interesting to determine whether there are more engineers (other than software) employed in the manufacturing sector or Government Sector.

A quick search on “American Made Towels Linens” yields almost 12 million results on Google. One of the first links I saw was USA produced towels which can be purchased at WalMart.com

I don’t know. I’m not an economics major, but are you sure that If Trump places a 15% or 20% or 25% tariff on imported goods then our cost for them goes up? Wouldn’t there be a balance with our exports?

A tariff is a tax. It is levied on imports in order to protect domestic industries. If Trump implements a 25% tariff then an imported TV that cost me $100 before will now cost me $125 since the importer will certainly pass the tariff cost along. A domestic TV manufacturer now knows that they can charge $125 for their TV and still compete with foreign providers. Either way my cost goes up.

Wouldn't there be a balance with our exports?

Tariffs are not affected by trade balances but by imports of the item they are taxing.

We need to muster the right army to the fight. This is the army led from heaven, not the army led from hell. The former are more powerful just as God is more powerful than the devil. And it can’t cower in fear of what the latter will do.

This is not the whole picture: it also pushes wages back into the USA and makes it feasible for there to be enough manufacturing in the USA that it can still compete amongst itself while still there. Hard to be part of that dynamic if you are only the sole source in the USA of an item. People may buy your goods for nostalgia’s sake but it’s then either you or the highway.

Keep in mind that the pre income tax Federal government was all funded from tariffs too. Somehow that didn’t push a whole land into poverty.

You like cheap China stuff bad enough, go to China and live there and use it. OK?

And asking for a Bork amendment is not like asking for a 2nd amendment nullification unless the people of the country are so far gone that it (to put it bluntly) deserves to be made to dive into that kind of hell.

It’s sort of decayed into being there to protect the government’s privileges.
