In Iowa, Trump intensifies ‘birther’ attack against Cruz

Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Ted Cruz at two Iowa campaign rallies on Saturday, urging voters to reject the Texas senator by saying his Canadian birth raises serious questions about his eligibility to become president.

"He was born in Canada. I guess his parents voted in Canada," Trump said at an afternoon rally in Clear Lake. "So if you were born in Canada, immediately it's a little bit of a problem."

Trump added: "You cannot put somebody there that's gonna go in ... he's going to be immediately sued."

Earlier Saturday, Trump said at a rally in Ottumwa that Cruz "has to straighten out his problems," a veiled reference to the so-called "birther" issue. But he declined to elaborate further, saying, "We'll discuss that later."

Cruz, however, is a naturally-born U.S. citizen, and most legal experts agree that he is qualified to be commander-in-chief.

But recently, he has had to aggressively push back on questions pushed from Trump about his eligibility for the presidency. He renounced his dual Canadian citizenship in 2014, and on Friday, Cruz's campaign shared with the conservative website Breitbart a copy of his mother's birth certificate showing her born in the United States.

Trump can't even carry himself, how can he carry anyone else? Oh wait Trump went to Wharton. Chortle! What a fake!

And yet he is worth $10B, what a loser.

Believe me, this is not an issue pressed by Cruz supporters. We know what the facts and the law.

What I want to see is Trumps own dual nationality explored. What we are seeing now is monumental hypocrisy.

The framers put in “natural born” to put a premium on a certain type of citizenship.

Why else include it ?

Ted never crawled on his belly, pleading with the ref to save him from the fight.

-Each country makes up its own rules about who is or is not a citizen. -

You are confused. Being a citizen is not that same as being a “natural born” citizen in the context of the late 18th century.

Read about natural law, which the Constitution is based on.

You are right of course. Unfortunately that ship has sailed and you and I appear to have been left on shore.

Trump’s mother was naturialized on March 10, 1942 and she took an oath to renounce all other claims of citizenship upon her.

Are you calling his mother a liar?

It does not matter what Britain says, if she took a specific oath to renounce Britain’s claim upon her.

So, there is not an issue with Trump. He is born of two American citizens.

Is Ted still a Canadian citizen? Surely you recognize HIS renunciation of Canadian claims upon him.

Or do you? Since Canada is a dominion of Great Britain, I guess, by your logic, Cruz still has a claim of British nationality on him.

Trumpets are just so stupid!
Being a natural born citizen and being a citizen of another country are not mutually exclusive. If two married. Americans work at the US embassy in London, England and have a baby in London, the child is a natural born American citizen. At the he same time the child is a British citizen cause he was born in London. Get it?

My friend, you can see it that way, if you wish.

But when Trump goes before a crowd and says, as he did today, that Cruz is not a natural born citizen (see the video clip above), that’s not creating doubt, that’s an
affirmative attack.

I agree. Trump is the only person who will stop the illegal, terrorist invasion coming to this country. No one else has the guts and aggression to stop it. Trump will pound this issue non-stop in congress and his fight will be televised 24/7. Who else is driven to be successful? Crus is a great lawyer, but he’s not a fighter.

And Cruz’s parents arrived in Canada in 1967.

Cruz was born in 1970.

And Canadian law requires 5 years of residency before a person can become a citizen-—

Ok then. So when did Trump renounce his British citizenship then?
Are you aware that Trump's mother was born in Scotland, and therefore Trump was a British citizen at birth?

Oh yeah? Cruz’s Lying by claiming in his most authoritative voice that “it is settled law” when it is clearly NOT is crawling on a snakes belly like the snake he is. His votes have shown me what a fraud he is.

If Cruz wins in Iowa (still not a given), he'll have enough steam to head on to New Hampshire?

Cruz has never expected to win NH - if he did, that would truly be the end of Trump. Cruz'z strategy is to win Iowa, outperform expectations in NH, come in 1st or 2nd in SC then dominate the SEC primary. If Cruz comes in as one of the top 3 in NH, he will get more momentum out of that than Trump will from winning.

New Hampshire is critical...

I love this. Because Cruz is leading in Iowa, Trump supporters talk all day about how Iowa means nothing. But because Trump is leading in NH, suddenly winning NH is critical. Actually, neither state is critical, but both have the potential to build momentum. Trump actually has the greater risk in NH. He is expected to win by a lot - if Rubio can make it close, even if Trump wins it will suck a lot of wind out of Trump's sails.

I am not confused, and I know all about natural law. I have three books on the subject on a bookshelf not five feet from where I sit. The Federalist Papers also reside there. Unfortunately, I confess I do not possess a copy of Vattel.

I am not debating with you or anyone about the meaning of “natural born citizen”. I know very well what the framers meant by that term. I also know that their definition is no longer in vogue, and that the statutory definition of citizen at birth now stands in its place.

My advice to you is to get used to it. In this instance, original intent is gone, and it is never coming back.

That’s point no 1.

Point number two is this: my statement that each nation makes its own rules about who is or is not a citizen, national or subject is true today and it was true at each and every moment from the late 18th century and earlier until this very day.

We need not concern ourselves with Canada’s laws or practices, or Great Britain’s either.
