How To Stop Donald Trump? A Lesson From Louisiana
Boston Globe ^ | December 19, 2015 | Joanna Weiss

Posted on 12/19/2015 4:40:42 AM PST by Jim Noble

So much for the establishment's efforts to stop Donald Trump. So far, nothing's working - not a thousand earnest think pieces or Jeb Bush's gripes in the latest debate. Not the wrath of news anchors and late-night hosts, who still can't resist booking Trump on their shows, but have started to get ornery during the interviews.

So maybe it's worth looking back to 1991 Louisiana, when establishment Republicans and Democrats banded together to defeat a popular, populist, problematic gubernatorial candidate named David Duke...

I spoke this week to some veterans of the anti-Duke battle, who told me they've been talking up this very idea, while noting that the parallels aren't exact. As hard as it is to divine Donald Trump's motivations - as much as his Bulworth act can sound like bigotry, and possibly is ...

Would a little more digging into Trump's past, plus a loud dose of Louisiana-style dark humor, accomplish what all of the hand-wringing hasn't?

well dude...what Doughty and you are ignoring are his comments about healthcare over the last 20 years.....and how this new things is, well, new. I care far less about policy papers ghost written by hired conservative policy wonks and far more about what animates the man.

In the past few months, he’s praised on national TV the universal systems in Scotland and Canada - he’s said - that “I’m gonna be great for women’s health...I’m gonna take care of them” - and so on.

Ignore the inner leftist at our nation’s own peril......

All since he decided to run... What, in his life history?

In fairness to me, I’m not moving the goalposts on you. The life history part is always how I ask the question. This thread is the first time I shortened it for brevity’s sake. Sorry for any confusion.

Not if you’re a horse. John Kerry would find her attractive.

No one has any dirt on him. YOu will not find a Bill Cosby past.

Yeah...but I bet he doesn't have a NY barber license

Two years of licensed New York State barber apprenticeship is required in order to apply for New York State barber exam.

ripnbang: "And they haven't already?"

Trump is showering the media with high viewer ratings, so they do what they must to keep him front & center.
But in the end, the Left Media is even more devoted to their ideology than to money, and will do everything they can to defeat him.

Just to be clear: I'm not saying they will necessarily defeat Trump, only that they'll throw everything they have at him, true or false.
In their minds it's Billie Jean King versus Bobby Riggs all over again:

Keep in mind Trump may be a Freeper.

That thought warms my heart. But I don't think he'd have the *time*.

However I could see him having a couple of trusted staffers dedicated to lurking here to pick up the conservatives' feelings, and gain ideas...

RoosterRedux: "Hillary has nothing that they wouldn't have found (which is why they hate Trump with such a passion...they know he's unstoppable)."

Believe me, I hope you're right and I'm wrong.
But Trump must have a zillion contracts with innumerable entities, any of which could be thrown into suspicion by well-placed rumors, accusations and government investigations.
People who have been "hurt by Trump" will become big, BIG news if & when the time is right.

That's my prediction, I hope I'm wrong.

You only invite attacks on your candidate when you come onto a Trump thread trash Trump is little more then hateful insults. One of the more “putting off” things about Cruz is that a lot of his supporters are vile and hateful towards everyone but Cruz.

As soon as I saw “1991” I stopped reading. These morons think they are going to stop Trump with something from a 25 year old playbook. Trump is writing his own rules and nothing will stop him but himself which is not very likely.

Do some research. Trump is a solid fiscal conservative, and has been for years. With the debt this seems fairly important.

There are more, just watch how other candidates cobb on to the issues Trump bulldozes into the open.

Problem is, the other candidates are right here.

Nice try, troll-boy.

Reagan used to be a Democrat, too.

Trump loves the country and wants to undo the damage the left has done over the last 50 years.

Does he suck on some stuff ? Yes.

By contrast, the GOPe says all the right things during campaigns, and then goes and votes the exact opposite, and punishes those few conservatives who *do* make it past the dog-and-pony primaries into office.

But when your back is against the wall, and your own party's leadership has for going on at least 20 years, openly lied to its base, to the point that they now feel safe spitting in our face --

taking the time to see that your lace panties match the tastefully-appointed pommel on your ceremonial (blunt) sword is insufficient.

When the times get really tough and the decisions are excruciating, how do you know which set of guiding principles he will use to make his decision?

There is no way to truly know that of ANY potential President.

Who could have ever foreseen the old Cold Warrior Richard Nixon going to Communist China to improve relations? Or that Reagan would, in the final year of his Presidency, go to the Soviet Union with the objective of finding common ground and making peace, would answer a reporter who said "Mr. President, do you still consider yourself to be in an 'Evil Empire'"? and Reagan emphatically answered "No."

I cannot predict how a potential President Trump would act (or not act) to any hypothetical crisis, however I do believe that whatever his decision(s) would be, they would be in our best National interest, and based upon what was best for America.

We know he will choose America's interests over the Third World (including Muslims); we know he will choose policies which promote industriousness over indolence; we know he will favor business over Communism.

That's more than ANY President has done since Reagan.
