Until Monday, when Donald J. Trump proposed a ban on Muslims entering the United States, Hillary Clinton could hardly keep herself from laughing at the mention of his name. "I'm sorry, I can't help it," she told ABC News on Sunday, letting out a giggle that made advisers squirm.
She is no longer laughing.
At a town hall here on Wednesday, Mrs. Clinton delivered her most damning, direct criticism of Mr. Trump, saying that he traffics "in prejudice and paranoia," and that his Muslim proposal was "not only shameful, it's dangerous."
But Mrs. Clinton also strove to recognize something stirring in the electorate that Mr. Trump had clearly tapped into. "It's O.K., it's O.K. to be afraid," she said. "When bad things happen, it does cause anxiety and fear," she added. "But then you pull yourself together and, especially, if you want to be a leader of our country, and you say:'O.K., what are we going to do about it? How are we going to be prepared?'"
The remarks bore little resemblance to Mrs. Clinton's previous dismissals of Mr. Trump, She had portrayed him as a reality television sideshow who voiced more extreme terms beliefs that, she contended, his more serious G.O.P. rivals shared.
But since Mr. Trump's response to the Dec. 2 terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Calif., Mrs. Clinton and her campaign, confounded by his continued strength in the polls, have had to rethink how they handle Mr. Trump and what his candidacy, and the anger in the electorate that has fueled it, means for her chances in 2016.
Some of her own voters are giving her reason to.
Bennie Stickley, a 75-year-old in Gilbertville, Iowa, who retired from a John Deere factory, said he was supporting Mrs. Clinton but agrees with Mr. Trump's proposal to bar Muslims.

I think you make a good point. I think the Dems know that a significant number of their own voters are tinkering with the idea of voting for Trump because they’re frustrated with the extreme leftward lurch of their party and the country as well. This upcoming election does have similarities with the 1980 campaign. We were faced with economic uncertainty, dealing with a major problem in the Middle East, and struggling because of a directionless Democrat administration. Funny how history repeats itself without really trying to.

Over here, everybody in the establishment in the political class, Republican, Democrat, media, you name it, is all claiming that what Trump said is dumb, stupid, reckless, dangerous, unconstitutional, while it is the law of the land. And it was utilized by Jimmy Carter, no less, in 1979 to keep Iranians out of the United States, but he actually did more. He made all Iranian students already here check in, and then he deported a ton of them.
There is precedent for everything Donald Trump has said he wants to do. And if you listen to the wizards of smart in this country and our political establishment, you will think that this stuff is just unheard of, it’s almost unspeakable, it’s just indecent. Here we have in the establishment the reputed best and brightest, the smartest. We’re not even qualified to be in their company no less. And they’re dunces on this.
In November the 1979 United States attorney general had given all Iranian students one month to report to the local immigration office. Seven thousand were found in violation of their visas, 15,000 Iranians were forced to leave the United States, 1979. When this law, inadmissible aliens I just read to you, which I’m gonna be reading a lot to you today to the point you’re gonna get tired of hearing it, but you won’t forget it.
Please send this to fellow conservatives, media outlets and to liberals, who need a whack in the head with reality of how their President Truman signed this law and later Carter used it to get rid of a lot of potentially dangerous Iranians.

Except for the fact that Hillary let 40 Americans come under attack in Benghazi by heavily armed terrorists and she denied them military help. She went to sleep and Barack Obama went to a Las Vegas fundraiser - and 4 heroes died. Then she lied about a video tape, because it couldn’t be terrorism, they had destroyed terrorism. Then she lied to the parents of the slain heroes telling them that they would get the man who made that video. Then she lied to the public, saying that she did not lie to the families. All she does is lie, and lose American lives.
They own San Bernardino - that terrorism belongs to her and Barack Obama. Their policies are failures, Libya is a failure, our own security is at risk and they want to bring in 60,000 illiterate Manchurian Candidates to kill us.
Iran is stoning women to death, while crowds cheer, and throw stones. Saudi Arabia just beheaded a man for leaving Islam. If that is Islam, and Obama says it is, then I want no part of it. How can you have a nuclear agreement with these Iranian monsters who scream “death to America”, and then stone women for adultery. Someone explain that. After that disgrace, Trump sounds like a saint. We are going to let these Muslim scumbags lecture us on morality after they do that.

Good observation! She’s done this for quite some time now. My analysis is that she thinks that every word she utters is “pure gold”; it’s her growing delusion. It’s also why she does that insipid head shake and self-congratulatory smile when she thinks her jokes are so damn witty. Further, it’s also why she SIGNS her mashed potato tweets with an “-H” (like a handful of Freepers do here, and as if we can’t figure out who posted the “golden little opus”). It’s a symptom of a small person who’s been aggrandized by way too many other small people for far too long.
