Ted Cruz Questions Donald Trump's 'Judgment' to Be President (Uh oh)
NY Times ^ | Maggie Haberman and Matt Flegenheimer

Posted on 12/10/2015 7:49:24 AM PST by RoosterRedux

Senator Ted Cruz raised questions on Wednesday at a private fund-raiser about whether Donald J. Trump, his bombastic rival for the Republican presidential nomination, has the "judgment" to be president and mused about "strength," according to two people who attended the event in Manhattan

The remarks from Mr. Cruz came as he has studiously avoided public criticism of Mr. Trump, who is handily beating the rest of the Republican field in opinion polls.

Mr. Cruz has positioned himself to be the beneficiary of any erosion of support for Mr. Trump. While he has said he doesn't agree with Mr. Trump's proposal for a ban on Muslim immigrants entering the United States, he has taken pains to praise Mr. Trump for making immigration a focal point of his candidacy.

But inside a conference room in a Madison Avenue office, with about 70 people pressed around a table, Mr. Cruz gave a candid assessment of the race, lumping Mr. Trump with another candidate whose supporters the Texas senator hopes to poach, Ben Carson, according to two people present for the remarks.

Cruz’s spokesperson confirm the jab. Cruz backers need to own up to their jabs at Trump. Cruz has made several at Trump already.

Just answered question sideways - said elections always come down to questions of judgement. Would not talk about events at private fundraiser.

I heard from a reliable source that New York Times staffers were criticizing Hillary for advocating for muslims at a drunken event they were attending in Pittsburg. They refused to identify themselves because none of them were wearing clothing at the time.

All the "Trump/Cruz" slogans here for months have always amused me.

First, some Trump folks thought by adding "Cruz" to "Trump" they were avoiding heat and hostility from the Trump haters.

Second, the "dream team" idea that Trump would pick Cruz as his veep, or that Cruz would accept the useless, ceremonial, funeral-attending role of vice-president shows a lack of "real-politiks" understanding.

You can make book that Trump already has a fascinating, capable, well-known conservative in mind for his running mate...maybe even a true patriot from the high echelon of the retired military, who knows....but it definitely won't be the lackluster Cruz who has little to no charisma and who has remained mired in low-echelon ratings since the beginning.

“If so, the Trump guns will train on Cruz and his numbers will plummet.”

You are right. It would fit Trump’s nature to decimate him over this, and I could not blame him.

It would be a crying shame if Cruz falls on his sword on behalf of a terrorist surge into the US.

Say it ain’t so. Don’t do it Ted. I don’t want a war breaking out between the two best candidates. Trump has already said he has things to attack Cruz with, but Cruz has to hit him first. I hope he doesn’t see this as a “hit.”

It wont.

Because it was a dirty ad when LBJ did it, and was a complete joke when they tried to use it against Reagan.

Nukes arent there to be used if someone is having a bad day, and it is absurd to use it as an attack against any candidate.

I like some of the things that Trump says, but I can’t get past how he said his favorite president was Bill Clinton. Am I taking that out of context?? Or did he really mean it?

How many jobs did this lawyer create? He has worked for the govt all his life (Cruz has). I am kind of sick and tired of conservatives who worked their whole adult lives in govt positions talking like they are outsiders.

Cruz has been unable to connect with voters like Trump. Cruz draws the same pathetic crowds as the other contenders. The MSM has painted him as a right wing crazy and unlike their attacks on Trump, these seem to have stuck. Cruz has no crossover appeal to Dems and Independents like Trump has.

Cruz is the smartest, most articulate, conservative in the race. Unfortunately, he can't win.

These are two ambitious men running for the nomination. It would be political malpractice if they didn't try to distance themselves from each other at some point.

It sounds like Cruz is making the first move but the game is inevitable.

It's silly to blame the NYT for reporting on what everyone knew was coming.

Cruz is a politician who smells blood. Washington hasn’t produced anything else in a long, long time. Cruz wouldn’t be where he is without Trump. But the winds of war have shifted and he’s going to take full advantage while maintaining just enough cover. I, for one, am sick to death of watching politicians dance.

I agree....Cruz was most likely commenting on other people questioning Trump’s judgement to be president and how he was positioned to pick up anyone who may jump Trump’s ship....and the NY Slimes is trying to sow seeds of discord.

It’s time to balance the freaking scales at the very least, and at this moment Glenn Beck [via phone to radio] confirms the persecution of Syrian Christians.

No more muslims, but ALL Syrian Christians should be welcome with open arms!

Then Cruz did question Trump’s judgment. It’s confirmed by Cruz’s team that the report was accurate.

Here we go.....

IF Trump gets the nomination, I don’t think Cruz gets VP. I don’t mean that in a bad way, just that I think he is more valuable in the Senate, as an AG or SCOTUS. Outside of evangelicals, what does he add to the ticket that Trump doesn’t already have? What states would Trump not otherwise pick up already? Will the Cruz conservatives sit home and not vote for Trump with another VP in a general election vs Hillary? I don’t think so.

No prob...noteworthy is that Cruz did NOT specifically aim at TRUMP, the reporters first question was about Trump, Cruz answered in a general way speaking about judgement of all candidates including himself, and the voters will decide. Trumpeters are frothing over a nothingburger.
