Authorities Sunday night identified the man who became stuck in the chimney of a Huron home during a botched burglary attempt and died after the homeowner lit a fire in the fireplace.
Tony Botti, spokesman for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, said the man identified by the county coroner was 19-year-old Cody Caldwell. The cause of death was smoke inhalation and burns, Botti said.
Sheriff’s Lt. Brandon Pursell said deputies received a 911 call to the 16000 block of West Gale Avenue just before 3 p.m. Saturday. After lighting a fire, the male homeowner heard screams coming from somewhere inside the house. When the resident realized a person was in the chimney, he extinguished the fire.

So what would possess the burglar to try the chimney route? Did he think the house was alarmed? If so, were the alarms only for traditional entry points? Doors, Windows, Garage doors and the like?
Would a homeowner with every entry point alarmed even consider a couple or three interior IR/Motion Detectors? If so, then what good would entering through a chimney do?
I have every door, window and garage doors alarmed. I also have IR/Motions covering the Basement, LR areas and another room where there are items I definitely don’t want stolen.
It just doesn’t make any sense to me someone would go through all that and not think it out.
If criminals were smart, they would not be criminals, especially the petty thief types.
The smart ones hold office...
Just saying.
Play stupid games - win stupid prizes.
The young burglar was not properly educated when young.
Santa Claus gets away with going down chimneys because he is **magic**. Since ordinary people are not magic, they can’t go down chimneys.
Since ordinary people are not magic

I love happy endings.
A squirrel got stuck in our wood stove a couple years back. Smelled like hell.
If the teenager is black or Hispanic or even better a wetback, I can almost near guaran-damn-tee we will hear cries of racism from the Preferred & Protected group he is/was a member of.
Maybe even an investigation from the Just-us Dept.
Hope they have great insurance. Though I don’t know if his parent or family will sue, that is always a risk.
Good for the owner. A happy ending but what about (ugh!) the fat dripping down into the fireplace, ruining all that good wood, and the smell?
Two bucks says the homeowner knew the burglar was there.
There'd be a lot of shouting.
Unless the homeowner was deaf, this was deliberate.
BULLY FOR THEM!
Under what legal theory could the relatives of the burglar possible sue anyone? I realize we live in an age of insanity, but I cannot imagine any legitimate basis for a lawsuit.
I bet it was Obama’s son. Or at least it looked like Obama’s son after the cooking was done!
(I know that was bad but I just couldn’t help myself :) )
Heartwarming.
Held his feet to the fire
