Donald Trumps latest media and political firestorm stems from ambiguous answers to a reporter's question: Whether he would support making Muslims register in a national database.
But his comments are not quite as cut-and-dried as the headlines would make them seem.
The headlines started after Yahoo News published an article Thursday based on an interview with the Republican presidential candidate. The reporter apparently asked Trump whether new security measures might involve a database to register Muslims in the U.S.
When he replied, âWeâre going to have to â weâre going to have to look at a lot of things very closelyâ including mosques, Yahoo News reported that Trump did not ârule [the database] out.â
He was then asked by CNN whether he would rule out such a database, to which Trump said he ânever responded to that questionâ during the Yahoo News interview.
But a separate exchange with NBC News muddied the picture of his position further.
The reporter initially asked Trump whether there should be a database to track Muslims.
âWe should have a lot of systems,â Trump responded, but then went on to tout the importance of a strong border and a border wall. Asked whether he would like to implement that, Trump responded:
âI would certainly implement that. Absolutely.â
That single line was swiftly interpreted in several news stories as Trumpâs endorsement of a database for Muslims, in turn prompting a widespread backlash. Some stories even stated that Trump had proposed a âplanâ to register Muslims in a database.
However, in the NBC News exchange, Trump appeared to be referring in that single line to border and immigration security measures, because he then said the effect would be, âIt would stop people from coming in illegally.â

Media, the GOPe, and the losing candidates are all grasping at straws to find anything to stick on Trump. Even Cruz pathetically is trying this. Shame on him and all of them.
The exchange is not that long. Fox, and everyone else, should post the whole thing. Trump makes it clear that he was talking about not letting problem people in the country in the first place, and the wall is the essential component.
In my opinion, ALL American Muslims who are really against Islamic Terrorism should be glad to have their names added to a data base. After all, they would have nothing to hide and certainly would not be carrying out any terrorist actions! So why would they fuss about it???
The treasonists are going to try every trick in the book to bring Trump down. Now they are using setup questions and then exaggerating his answers, something they’ll never do to Hitlery.
What did Cruz (a true conservative except for h1b visas, but nobody’s perfect, not even Trump) say about Trump that has you upset?
You do know that Trump has said he will be going after Cruz when the time is right?
I’m a Cruz man, but the more I hear of Trump the better I like him!I think registering members of a known terrorist sect is a good idea!
I knew this day was coming.
2016 will be hell.
They thought it would bring the Donald down.
Register all MSM reporters and place them in a camp in Northeast Alaska near the Yukon Border. That would truly be chilling. He he he
Wait. Did Trump say it or not?
I wish Jim Robinson would call for a moratorium on the use of apostrophes.......
I didn't suggest a database-a reporter did. We must defeat Islamic terrorism & have surveillance, including a watch list, to protect America.
He needs to avoid words like "that" and "it".
If he was referring to the wall his answer should have been specific. This kind of 'gotcha' has a half life that will not allow it to die.
I suspect there are probably already laws on the books. Plotting the violent overthrow of the government is certainly a crime. I suspect there are mosques where there is teaching that is equivalent to violation of this law. Those mosques should definitely be shut down and their members registered.
There is one common denominator among the terrorists. They’re all muslim. So, therefore, a muslim data base would not be called a muslim data base. It would be called a muslim TERRORIST data base. Simple as that.
The real solution is declare islam to be a political entity like Nazism.
I hope Trump is more proactive in clearing this up. Even Yeb has hopped on the smear wagon.
At the direct question, should there be a database for Muslims, The Donald simply ignored the question, and walked away from NBC.
Any time there are persons legally entering the country, I do not care from what nation or for what purpose, there should be a database established for the period of time they remain guests of our nation. We should be able to find foreign visitors any time there comes up a question of perhaps illegal actions while here.
Now, obviously, if we DON’T know they have entered the country, there is no possible manner in which a comprehensive database could be maintained. And this is much the greater danger, as we have no idea as to the intentions or locations of these intruders, until they trip some internal alarm by coming into conflict with the law and police attempt to detain them.
Sometimes the detention is successful.

They are already IN a database. If they are coming into this country LEGALLY, they are registered and given documentation to verify their status. In addition it is their responsibility to live up to the terms of their “status” which means address updates, job status, marital status, etc.
If our immigration department is doing it’s JOB, they are already in a database!
The Muslims should be lucky if a database is the worst they’re subjected to. They certainly deserve worse, and they certainly do worse to the non-Muslim societies they enter.
