Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes was forced several times today to clarify a comment made by President Obama that aired Friday morning hours before ISIS terrorists murdered more than 125 in Paris.
'I don't think they're gaining strength,' Obama had said of the terrorist organization on Good Morning America. 'What is true is that from the start our goal has been first to contain them and we have contained them.'
Contained, said Rhodes, was simply meant in terms of geography.
'The president was responding very specifically to the geographic expansion of ISIL in Iraq and Syria,' Rhodes told ABC This Week host George Stephanopoulos.
On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace also brought up Obama's comments, asking Rhodes if the administration had 'profoundly misjudged' the ISIS threat in light of the violent Parisian attacks. Rhodes noted that taking out ISIS would be a 'longterm challenge.' 'What the president was referring to very specifically was we had to stop their geographic advance in Iraq and Syria, where they were gaining more territory,' Rhodes said. 'We had done that.' Rhodes pointed out that ISIS had been rolled back in Northern Iraq and Northern and Eastern Syria.
'That's necessary to shrink the space they operate in,' he said, noting that the fighters 'very much depend on their safe havens' in the two war-torn countries.
'But that does not eliminate the threat as you saw so tragically in Paris,' Rhodes said.
CNN's Jake Tapper, host of State of the Union, acted even more incredulous when posing questions to Rhodes.

Funny if it weren’t so tragic.
Obama is past delusional. He has no idea what day it is. What a mess.
imam obama (may pigs be upon him): Okay team, how do we spin this so I don’t look like a complete and incompetent fool?
Oh, stop with the blithering f@tardery already. History knows what he said.
That is so pathetic. They’d have been better off just saying, we were mistaken, instead of this boldfaced and totally ineffective, unbelievable lying.
I think I get it. Rhodes was explaining that 0bama didn’t really say one incredibly stupid thing, he said a different incredibly stupid thing.
On December 6, 1941, there were a lot of Americans, including prominent Americans, who thought Japan had been contained. On December 8, 1941, they all admitted they were wrong, and acted accordingly. Barack Hussein Obama cannot do this—not “will not,” cannot, for it is not within him to admit he could possibly be wrong about anything. (Except gay marriage.)
>>Contained, said Rhodes, was simply meant in terms of geography.<<
They are contained in all of Europe, the Middle East, here in the USA and Latin America.
I think maybe the Orient doesn’t have this problem yet.
What a damn fool obozo is.
Tell another whopper because that one didn’t work.
Sorry, Charlie, too late.
Obama’s fulla sh*t and everyone knows it.
If you like your lying bastard pro-Islamist president, you can keep your lying bastard pro-Islamist president. PERIOD.
Can we have some sharia law ripping this foul liar’s tongue out!?
Containing them in France is probably not a good thing.
Barack and Joe were BOASTING in 2012 that they had Islamic terorists on the run. It’s 3 years later, and that ain’t so, Joe.
Contained geographically? Not to worry—Obama is working on fixing THAT one.
I have seen tops that spin less than the Obama Administration.
contained Geographically?? What does that mean? You either have them contained or you don’t!!!
