Carson on Friday made clear to reporters he would not stoop to Trump's level, while subtly condemning his words.
"Now that he's completed his gratuitous attack, why don't we press on and deal with the real issues," Carson told reporters in South Carolina before they could ask questions. "That's what the people of America are concerned about, not so much politics as usual, politics of personal destruction -- that's what the American people are sick and tired of."
Trump has sharpened his criticism of Carson, who he once said he would only attack if provoked, as the retired neurosurgeon rose in the polls. Earlier on Thursday, in an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett, Trump likened Carson's self-admitted "pathological" temper during his childhood to that of a child molester.
Carson also dismissed those comments, saying Trump does not understand the meaning of "pathological"
"It's not the kind of dialogue that I would ever engage in and I'm hopeful that his advisers will help him to understand the word pathological and know that that does not connote incurable," Carson said. "It simply describes something that is highly abnormal and something that fortunately I've been able to be delivered from for half a century now."
Carson has blasted the media during the past week for what he sees as biased attacks, objecting to the scrutiny of his history from various outlets, including CNN.
He also objected to a question saying Trump likened him to a child molester, saying that was media spin.
"I don't believe he called me a child molester," Carson said. "I always find it a little amusing what people in the press like to say. 'You compared this and therefore they're the same,' I don't buy all that."

Ben Carson has lost 5 points in the current Reuters daily polling since the stabbing incident started to get wide exposure. Trump saw that and pounced.

Both, Trump and Carson are done. Put a fork in them. That’s the problem with the Primary Process. Candidates destroy each other. In this case, Trump has done-in himself, and Carson. The next nominee of the Republican Party for President will be a Hispanic; either Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio. And, I predict neither Trump, nor Carson, will win Iowa. Just hide and watch.
Carson is being overly gracious. A person with any sort of decency or ethics would never compare the anger problem of a teenager or anyone to the pathology of a child molester. It was a deliberate attempt to suggest Carson might be a child molester and was as gutter as anything any Democrat has ever done.
Besides, it is extremely common for people with anger issues to overcome them, especially when those issues occur during adolescence. Some do it through counseling, others through religious conversion and many simply grow out of it as they mature.
The fact that Carson has not harmed anyone else for 50 years speaks for itself.
Child molesters on the other hand are more or less incurable.
What Trump has done is to put Carson (as Trump has done to others) off topic and on defense. This should be a learning lesson on how the ‘contenders’ are able to handle real world political heat. Trump may be an SOB but as of now he appears to be MY SOB.......
Nice guys finish last. It’s a little uncomfortable to me for sure, but Hillary is going to attack like no power hungry candidate has in history..and you need someone to respond it attacks better than ‘pray for him/her”. Trump will go after Hillary’s throat
we have no interest in syria
“I don’t believe he called me a child molester,” Carson said. “I always find it a little amusing what people in the press like to say. ‘You compared this and therefore they’re the same,’ I don’t buy all that.”
Woah. How many Freeper did the same thing.
CNN proves why Trump had to do what he did.
The network is anti-Trump, and pro Carson.
Folks, the media isn’t going to be anti-Carson.
If anyone is going after Carson, it has to be Trump. And Trump DID NOT spend 90 minutes on Carson.
Yikes, what liars.
If I had a dime for every time I heard someone predict that in the last 6 months, I'd be a wealthy man.
Media, Freepers, GOPe: the list of wishful thinkers goes on and on...
What business do we have in Syria? Russia is there at the request of the legal Assad government in Syria.
I’m pretty sure Trump and Carson are nowhere near as done as you are, after that post.
Not just CNN. Rush played a montage, same line on every single outlet.
“Carson sounds reasonable, but then he says things like our F15s should shoot down Russian jets in the MidEast... after we let the place go to hell.”
Yes. This was a smart move by Carson. And I thought his answer to shooting down the Russian fighters was very stupid too. Other ways to handle Putin.
Attempted murder on 3 different people is just as bad as a child molester in my book. He claims only the belt buckle saved him. Well suppose he had been successful and killed the guy? Would anyone still be defending Carson and say its okay?
He didn’t call you a child molester. He talked that you diagnosed yourself with pathological anger. There is no cure for pathological issues, such as a pathological child molester.
Politics are not for the faint of heart...they are mean and down right dirty, no holes barred and if you can't stand in the trenches with your candidate 100% you have no business being a supporter of said candidate...
I'm with Trump 100% and won't back down, I'll get just as dirty and muddy as he does, and I will back him to the bitter end!!!
Trump has the iron fisted grasp on restoring America and iron is the only thing that can turn things around. The rest of the candidates would just take the too "slow road" for change and will mess it up.
Dunno.
For some people it seems that the only thing that matters is he is a Christian and, of course, his past doesn’t matter because that was before his conversion. His positions don’t seem to matter much either, so Donald is doing what is necessary to shine the light of truth on his “story”.
It’s distasteful, but necessary.
