...there just aren’t that many mothballed military firearms left to destroy...
Five years ago or so, Zero stopped bringing back thousands of surplus M1 Garands that were loaned to the Greek government. They were scheduled to go to CMP for sales to the taxpaying public who paid for their manufacture.
In the last few years, CMP had Greek 30.06 in bandoleers with 8 round M1 clips in spam cans. The big spam cans sold for under $100. An occasional spam can and individual bandoleers from those spam cans show up at gun shows.
Seems like Smith and Wesson might be a more patriotic choice. The SW M+P 9mm is a nice platform.
“why in the world do they need a complete armament re-outfitting ?.......”
So the gubmint can waste more money. Perhaps congress has a brother-in-law or two that sells new weapons.
No, they’re going to hand them over to BATFE to get rid of them over them over the border.
I thought DHS was standardized on .357 Sig?
Educate me. I have a thirst for knowledge.
After this fight, which clearly demonstrated the inadequacy of the 9mm against tough suspects, the Bureau went to 10mm and then .40 to improve their penetrating and stopping power.
Guess that in Obama's FBI, the suspects have gotten smaller or maybe they just want to give them a better chance.
“inaccurate”?
I don’t argue balistics. To each his own. But I have never seen any evidence that the .40 is inherently innacurate. I’ve shot groups with my XD 40 that are almost as tight as those from my Ruger MK target pistol.
For what it’s worth, a gun store that used to be near me (it’s probably gone by now) used to display a revolver that had been decommissioned. According to the story, the government just threw a bunch of these guns onto an airport runway and then drove over them with a steamroller.
The resulting flat gun was actually pretty cool. I tried to buy it off the owner, but he wasn’t selling.
Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna, Georgia has a couple of display cases FILLED with nothing but police trade-in worn out Glocks in 40 caliber.
I made up my mind long ago that I’d never own a 40 caliber. I’ve got everything else pretty much but I just don’t need a round bigger than a 9mm and smaller that a 45 Auto or 45 Colt....(and yes, I know all the arguments about how 40s are better). I just never did want to compete with the cops when the ammo shortage hit.
I’d rather see the FBI go to all 45GAP......hahahahahahhah!
Yeah, like they listen to you. LOL! Kind of my feelings too. As much as I like the stats for the .40, the most commonly used ammo seems to still be the 9. Plus I got a killer deal on some .22 just before it suddenly became, uh, unavailable. Still got .38, .357 and 12 gage which are more easily found. And tradeable. Or is it barterable. :>}
I used to own two “forty’s” and I couldn’t keep my groups together after 2 shots. Two friends of mine had similar experiences and traded in their 40’s like me.
Any high pressure round like 40 & 5.56 is going to make it much harder to stay on target for most people after a few rounds. It’s why I’d rather shoot a 44 special over a 44 magnum.
But like you said “to each his own”. Some people don’t have issues with it.
“Apparently, today’s FBI has completely forgotten the April 1986 shootout in Pinecrest Florida. Their 9mms and .38s didn’t do them a lot of good...After this fight, which clearly demonstrated the inadequacy of the 9mm...”
The difference between then and now is that the technology of bullets has progress significantly over the last 30 years. The terminal ballistic performance of new 9mm ammo designed for self defense has been greatly improved.
That being said...I’m still a .45ACP kind of bullet bigot!
I hope you are joking.
If not, here’s the skinny.
9 MM Parabellum is also 9 MM Luger.
9 MM short is also 9 MM Kursk or more widely in the U.S. the .380
Almost all pistols designated 9mm here in the States would be “Lugers” while the 9 mm short or Kursk are most commonly sold as the .380 (Think James Bond and his Walther).
Does that help?
Even so come quickly.
Let’s get the inevitable over so my children can see what their great grandfather fought for, a restored USA.
The only thing that the ‘86 shootout demonstrated is that you need a good hit to get a quick threat stoppage, and pistol vs. rifle isn’t a fair fight. In a pistol platform it doesn’t matter what caliber you are shooting if you miss. Advances in bullet design over the last 30 years has made the differences in pistol calibers negligible. That being said, never bring a pistol to a rifle fight.
The most cost effective solution may be to re-barrel the 40s with 9 mm conversion barrels which are widely available and cost < $100. They may or may not need to replace the magazines as well depending on the specific gun model.
I know a lady not much over 100 pounds and 5’4’’ that took a training course and fired 500 rounds of 45 auto. It is technique and mental attitude not size.
