Apparently, today's FBI has completely forgotten the April 1986 shootout in Pinecrest Florida. Their 9mms and .38s didn't do them a lot of good against two suspects armed with one Ruger Mini-14.

After this fight, which clearly demonstrated the inadequacy of the 9mm against tough suspects, the Bureau went to 10mm and then .40 to improve their penetrating and stopping power.

Guess that in Obama's FBI, the suspects have gotten smaller or maybe they just want to give them a better chance.

The difference between then and now is that the technology of bullets has progress significantly over the last 30 years. The terminal ballistic performance of new 9mm ammo designed for self defense has been greatly improved.

That being said...I’m still a .45ACP kind of bullet bigot!

The only thing that the ‘86 shootout demonstrated is that you need a good hit to get a quick threat stoppage, and pistol vs. rifle isn’t a fair fight. In a pistol platform it doesn’t matter what caliber you are shooting if you miss. Advances in bullet design over the last 30 years has made the differences in pistol calibers negligible. That being said, never bring a pistol to a rifle fight.

The latest FBI studies say that with the newest ammo there isn’t much difference between .40 and 9mm in terms of effectiveness.

That fight was stopped with a 38 special. The death of one of the bad guys came with one of the very first shots...it just took a while. The 9mm has ample penetration, as do most rounds with modern ammo. The ammo is better now than it was 30 years ago.

Bullet placement. And no handgun has significant “stopping power”. For that, you need a rifle.

>> against two suspects armed with one Ruger Mini-14.

... and a shotgun. And a .357 revolver, and a Dan Wesson revolver of unspecified caliber. All four of those firearms were fired by the perps in the course of the battle.

But their mini-14 did do most of the damage.

9mm is cheaper. The decision was probably made on those grounds.

In 1986, all they had were their pistols. These days, there will be .223 rifles in every car. The pistol is now just for unexpected incidents.
