GIVING IT ALL YOU'VE GOT
Ever hear the expression "Giving it the whole nine yards"? Do you happen to know where it comes from? I used to think it was a sports term. "Not so", say several experts. But there seem to be at least two schools of thought on the phrase's origin. Both seem plausible. I'll let you decide. One explanation says that it's an expression from the construction trade. A full truck load, according to this rationale, will dump nine cubic yards of sand or gravel at your work site. In such a case, I suppose the expression would imply doing a job completely or thoroughly. A second explanation claims that the term came from World War II fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their planes on the ground, the .50 caliber machine gun ammunition belts measured exactly 27 feet. Thus, if a pilot fired all his ammo at a target, it got "the whole nine yards." In that context, the expression would mean using every resource at our disposal. Either way, giving something "the whole nine yards" effectively means "giving it all you've got" or "stretching to reach a goal." But what's the motivation? Why expend that much effort or resources? Sure, we can easily understand how that might apply to special projects or circumstances, but to a daily routine, as a way of life? What's the payoff? Well, according to Philip Reed, former chairman of the board for General Electric, it's satisfaction and a sense of making a difference. In his observation, those people who seem both to give and to get the most out of life have two things in common. First, they do whatever they're doing "all out", whether it's work or play, dull or boring, little or big. They aren't necessarily flashy or compulsive about it. They've just made a habit of being satisfied only with their best effort. The second thing he says such people have in common is "the rather special satisfaction, the deep-down joy" they get out of being able to help other people. Just to be able to do a little something extra for a friend, client, patient, or even a complete stranger. For these people, it's a most rewarding experience. If "giving it all you've got" or "giving it the whole nine yards" is based simply on greed, anger, a drive for control, or even a lack of self-esteem, it can burn us out and leave us dispirited or empty. How much better it is to go through our day giving thanks and looking for ways to make life better. The REAL secret of "giving it all you've got," it would appear, is doing it out of a sense of "delight"...a matter of attitude and maturity. This is something to which all of us might aspire, something that might enrich our lives in ways we never expected...and something to consider. CAPT J. David Atwater, CHC, USN

Water and Life
November 1, 2015
Jesus answered, âEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.â
John 4:13-14
As Dave Mueller reached down and turned the handle, water rushed from the spigot into a blue bucket. Around him people applauded. They celebrated as they saw fresh, clean water flowing in their community for the first time. Having a clean source of water was about to change the lives of this group of people in Kenya.
Dave and his wife, Joy, work hard to meet peopleâs needs by bringing them water. But they donât stop with H2O. As they help bring people clean water, they also tell them about Jesus Christ.
Two thousand years ago, a man named Jesus stood at a Samaritan well and talked with a woman who was there to get clean drinking water for her physical health. But Jesus told her that what she needed even more than that was living water for her spiritual health.
As history has marched on and humanity has become more sophisticated, life still filters down to two truths: Without clean water, we will die. More important, without Jesus Christ, the source of living water, we are already dead in our sins.
Water is essential to our existenceâboth physically with H2O and spiritually with Jesus. Have you tasted of the water of life that Jesus, the Savior, provides?
Thank You, Jesus, for being our living water. Thank You for Your willingness to die on the cross and for Your power to rise from the dead in order to provide us that water.
Only Jesus has the living water to quench our spiritual thirst.
First-century Jews avoided traveling through Samaria. Making the journey from Galilee to Judea meant crossing the Jordan River and following the east side before re-crossing toward Jerusalem to circumvent Samaria. Why? Because Samaritans were seen as ceremonially unclean. Jesus, however, had no such qualms and broke tradition to meet a Samaritan woman in need. Bill Crowder

"I VOW TO THEE, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."

Good evening, Mayor, and a Blessed Lord’s Day to The Mayor family.
Thank you for today’s sustenance for body and soul.
We had almost 3” of unexpected snow yesterday. It’s finally just above freezing and the icy street is starting to melt and dry.

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
MOZART: REQUIEMMozart's last piece was his Requiem, for which he was commissioned by a nobleman who intended to pass the piece off as his own. He never finished it, and one of his students completed the work. More recently, others have taken Mozart's score and finished it in their own different ways.
Mozart set the Kyrie as a fugue in D minor, which is natural because of the repetitive nature of the Greek words. D minor is also the Viennese key of death thanks to "Don Giovanni." But this is Mozart wearing his size 15 triple-E boots, and it's one of his very finest works in counterpoint. No composer after Mozart dared to set the Kyrie as a fugue again.
Mozart does something at the end that is astonishing. He ends with a D chord with an open fifth (D-A-D). He leaves out the F or F# which would indicate whether the chord is D Major or D minor. But tonal ambiguity is not what he is attempting. There is no doubt that this is D minor. That open fifth is often used to illustrate space, and it is usually the space above, such as the sky. But in the last chord of the Kyrie and during the few seconds of its decay, Mozart gives a glimpse of the space below: the abyss. It's hair-raising.
This is John Eliot Gardiner conducting the English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir.
Mozart: Requiem, Introit & Kyrie, K. 626

We did fence work today. Substantial progress. The eyelid is doing well - I'm still daubing it with Bacitracin and applying cold compresses several times a day. I have to admit it's a little scary looking - the lower eyelid is partially everted - I'll spare you the images. I go back Friday for suture removal.

ALL SOULS DAY: DEATH AND RELIGION
SCHUBERT: "LITANY FOR THE FEAST OF ALL SOULS"Johann Georg Jacobi was a German poet of the second rank, and Franz Schubert at 19 turned this little bit of dross into his greatest gold. Tony Salieri was beside himself with pride when he heard this song. The mix of German and Italian styles is exquisite.
This is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau accompanied by Gerald Moore. The video contains subtitles in English.
