GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump claimed credit Sunday for Ford Motor Company's plans to move a production plant from Mexico to Ohio.
Trump has been calling out Ford during his campaign, saying the automaker plans to move jobs from Michigan to Mexico, but Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who also is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, says the move from Mexico to Ohio had nothing to Trump's demands. "The truth is that Ford began moving jobs back to Ohio four years ago under the leadership of Governor John Kasich," the governor's campaign said in a statement to the press on Sunday night.
"Our country needs real leadership and not empty, false rhetoric," Kasich said. "Working as a team, we brought Ford production jobs back from Mexico to Ohio years ago. That's how things really get done. Hard work and teamwork brings results for the people."
When Kasich announced Ford was bringing the jobs to Ohio in 2011 the vice president of Ford North America Manufacturing said it was "enabled by the Governor and his strong leadership," the campaign noted.

Yes, I believe I had read something about a transmission plant too. This would then be a third issue.
The third issue, the one I’m linking you too is the one Trump has been addressing. It was a plan to move Ford production to Mexico. Here’s a link to a report of it.
http://www.theyucatantimes.com/2015/07/ford-motor-company-moving-car-production-to-mexico/
Ford announced the move of F650 and F750 trucks from Mexico to Ohio in March 2014.
Production of the Ford C-max and Focus is still moving from Michigan to Mexico.
You are misinformed.
There was a plan to move a car production line to Mexico. I just linked you to a report of it.
Ford is no longer planning to move that production line to Mexico.
Trump is the guy that called Ford on it in front of the nation.
Kasich has been quiet as a church mouse on it.
Now he think’s he saved the day. No sale.
Ford was gone until Trump took them on. If Kasich made them an offer to get them to stay, all well and good, but Trump is the one who got the ball rolling.
Kasich didn’t take Ford to task in public. Trump did.
Ford flinched.
Well the great Ronald Reagan once said: There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don't care who gets the credit..
I think Kasich is being petty by making a big stink about this now. He should adopt Reagan's philosophy and acknowledge that so long as good things are being done, it does not matter who gets the credit.
That's the whole point. There is ZERO evidence that Ford has changed any of its plans to move any production to Mexico, other than the commercial truck lines that have already been moved from Mexico to Ohio. The source article for these rumors--the article that Trump himself re-tweeted in support of his claim that he should get credit for Ford changing its plans--was talking about the Ohio move, which Trump had nothing to do with.
What evidence do you have that Ford has cancelled any of its other Mexico plans?
Well said.
Thanks for the info. : )
No. Wrong. This plan was announced on July 9, 2015. Trump started talking about Ford in his campaign announcement speech in June. He could not have been talking about the move that was announced in July. And, in fact, this is what he said:
"Now, Ford announces a few weeks ago that Ford is going to build a $2.5 billion car and truck and parts manufacturing plant in Mexico. $2.5 billion, its going to be one of the largest in the world."
The $2.5 billion plant he was talking about was the one (two, actually) that Ford had already announced. The transmission plants. Not the production lines that they decided to move a month later, in July.
(by the way, doesn't the fact that Ford announced plans to move additional product lines to Mexico AFTER Trump was already criticizing Ford suggest that maybe Ford isn't so intimidated by Trump's talk?)
According to this article Ford said in 2011 that it was bringing 2 truck lines back to Ohio: http://chronicle.northcoastnow.com/2011/12/06/truck-line-coming-to-avon-lake-ford-plant/
Read "American Icon".
The folks who brought Ford and its jobs back were...
* Bill Ford for having the smarts to realize he was in over his head and to hire Allan Mulally.
* Allan Mulally for coming aboard.
* Give Allan credit for taking Mark Fields plan of "One Ford" and tweaking it and running with it.
* Listening to their head of Finance Lewis Booth I believe was his name was that kept saying essentially cash is king, cut your cost, get out of debt, and hold onto your cash.
Kasich didn't have a flippin' thing to do with it...
No doubt this kind of production is years in the planning, which is why any influence Trump has now likely won’t be reflected for several years.
Once again you cleared the brush. A very good question.
It looks quite opportunistic for Kasich to stand there in his best saliva corked voice saying, “Me, me, I did it all”, when he has been silent as closed peepers, and noisy Trump has BOOMED the *beatch about FORD, for months.
The optics are just what they are, and the truth is anybody’s best guess. But, Trump wins on optics. lol.
Wonder if Kasich will have a Bush-like melt down over the optics??
Wasn’t it Reagan that said, “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.”
The optics are just what they are, and the truth is anybodys best guess. But, Trump wins on optics. lol.
Except, the truth is NOT "anybody's best guess." Trump has been talking about Ford for months, yes, but Ford made its decision to move the truck lines to Ohio YEARS ago. And Ford has not changed its plans to build new engine and transmission plants in Mexico - which are the plants that Trump has been BOOMING about for months.
Great point///
I’m sorry but I don’t believe you. From everything I have read on the son of a mailman (and I’ve read a lot), he was not getting anywhere in his talks with Ford.
Trump’s 35% reverse import tax proposal is what did the trick.
Did Trump's proposal come with a time machine? Because Trump started talking about his proposal in June 2015(when he announced his candidacy). And, here is an article from March 2014, which discusses Ford's move of truck lines from Mexico to Ohio:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2014-03-07/ford-to-move-pickup-production-from-mexico-to-ohio-van-plant
So, tell me again, how is it that Trump's proposal "did the trick"?
“Kasich should have jumped in and said he already brought Ford jobs back when Trump mentioned doing so.”
I believe, in the debate, Trump said he would stop companies from going to Mexico.
Now, he’s claiming Ford came back due to him (he didn’t know Ford had already gone to Ohio). And, now, Kasich is setting the record straight.
Trump is uncontrolled sticks of dynamite, blowing up in any direction he thinks will get him what he wants. He doesn’t know how government works - I’m sure he thinks he can run the government like he runs his company where he has autonomous control. Now, he issues an order and people jump immediately to do it. He is no different in his actions now than Obama who issues orders (whether it is against the law or not). We can’t afford to have another president who doesn’t understand his actions must not exceed his power given him by the constitution.
Then why is he in the hole and can’t get any traction, even in his own state?
I was wrong on the parts thing, it was trucks. But, from what we now know, Ford will not build in Mexico, but also make cars in the USA. So, no, that doesn’t mean that Trump didn’t have anything to do with this.
