WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said on Sunday the Middle East would be more stable if Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein were still in power in Libya and Iraq, saying it's "not even a contest".
Trump mentioned the countries in comparison to current efforts to drive Syrian President Bashar al-Assad out of power.
"You can make the case, if you look at Libya, look at what we did there, it's a mess," Trump said on NBC.
"If you look at Saddam Hussein with Iraq, look what we did there, it's a mess. It's going to be the same thing" in Syria, he said.
Asked by NBC's Chuck Todd if the Middle East would be more stable with Gaddafi and Saddam in power, Trump replied, "Of course it would be."

We need energy independence to rid ourselves from dealing with that god-forsaken region.
Who it was how it was...
Sort of. I supported getting rid of Saddam, but only as long as we didn’t get into nation building. Of course, under Bush we DID get into nation building, but now I see if you break something like that, you can’t just leave it or the head choppers will have free reign. Bush at least made the effort for that not to happen, but always in America your friends are only good for as long as until the next election.
Sadly true. Those third world morons need an iron hand to rule them.
Saddam was a horrible animal...by decent people’s standards...by ME mussiscum standards he is just another guy!
Most of us remember what he was...but we also know how mussie scum think!
Ef em all!
YUP...we was lied to so we’d do their dirty work for them.
How stupid are we??? And now we’re importing them and the Muslim Brotherhood is throughout the White House and it isn’t “politically correct” to say anything negative about Muslims....i.e. “clockmed”.
The world is upside down!
I’m with you. Saddam had to go. He VIOLATED the agreements with the UN from 1991 that let him stay in power. The others, I’m still trying to figure out WHAT RIGHT we had to depose them - were they threatening us or our interests?
And I TOTALLY REMEMBER being warned about “US Imperialism” from my days at ESU. I guess that concern only applied when a Republican was in office.
You’re right, but at some point, the Hussein dynasty would have had to be removed. Saddam was starving his people and I don’t think he would have been able to keep a lid on things forever.
True.
The West should have listened to Churchill. I fear it’s too late now.
What was Hussein”up to”, other than brutally keeping his boot on the jihadists? We took him out, and chaos ensued
What was right in principle?
We had Iran surrounded before Obama took over.
Obama sided with the Muslim Brotherhood.
"We need energy independence to rid ourselves from dealing with that god-forsaken region."
It is enough to make you take a second look @ Rand Paul.
To much slop on K-Street, for this sadly. Don't think they are "nudging" us in the direction they want as well. Did ya see one of the Major Airlines will not fly to Israel anymore, hmmm. Talk to some airline pilots on the down-lo about that one and hear what they really think.
On the energy....
We have so many things at our disposal to make us independent or exporters of energy that it would even kick Putin in the privates as he tries to get all the pipelines he wants and to bring back the Russian Bears hegemony.
A freeper last week brought up Zapping Garbage with a Plasma to break it down and get it's energy and clean it up, their is Fracking, and where is our R & D Program to go with a LFTR Liquid Florine Thorium Reactors?
We don't have any of the above, and frankly I think Cruz and Trump wouldn't make the Garbage zapper and LFTR a national R & D priority. The whole flippin country is still enamored with the socialist alterative construct which is a falsehood and is in itself industrial Marxism the false profit of wind and solar...
As somebody put it well, by invading Iraq, George Bush hit a hornets nest with a baseball bat.
“many suffered in his rape rooms and there was endless suffering at the hands of Uday as well”
Not my circus. Not my monkeys.
I agree absolutely. As bad as Saddam and Quaddafi were, the alternative are all worse.
Kingdom seems to be all they understand. I could see sense in replacing Hussein with a Shah-type figure, but a democracy is going to be a joke.
A shah-type figure might have worked.
Since they’re so nuts about pig’s blood I don’t know why we don’t use it against them like what was done in WWII.
