Immigration is not going anywhere as a political issue, as much as some would like it to.
Although Democrats and the media whine over the term “anchor baby” and the concept of our national sovereignty, adults have to address real problems, and millions of people in the country illegally is a problem. So let’s address it, shall we?
Big business and big government love the idea of amnesty; cheap labor for one, a dependent voting bloc for the other. To that end, both agree to the lie that amnesty would be a boon to the economy.
Somehow we’re meant to believe employers of these low-skilled workers suddenly will decide the added expense of having legal workers on the payroll (payroll taxes, worker’s comp insurance, etc.) will be worth their clean conscience, or the fear of a previously unenforced fine will force their hand. They’re already willingly breaking the law. Why stop simply because those who’ve enabled you to do so are threatening to enforce it at some nebulous date in the future?
As for the illegal aliens, their desires never should be considered a priority over Americans. Those not on public assistance either knowingly work “under the table” or with stolen identities. Either way, who cares? Any choice they’ve made was a choice made of free will knowing the consequences.
The only reason to consider anything other than deportation is the expense. But there’s a way around that and to fix the mess politicians of both parties have created.
I’ve written about this before, but allow me to clarify and expand on it again in the hope that one or more of the feckless Republicans running for president decide meaningless platitudes does not a plan make.
First: Seal the borders. No one gets in, from anywhere, until we deal with those who are already here. That means heavy patrols on the southern border and immediate removal of those sneaking across. No excuses, no exceptions. Those seeking refugee status have the rest of the world to choose from; we have to get our house in order.
Second: Create a “Purple Card” to be offered to those here illegally who can prove they are employed. For lack of a better word, it is a form of amnesty. It will allow them to continue to work legally for a set number of years, after which it can be renewed if no crimes, not even misdemeanors, have been committed. If convicted of a crime, you’re out, no matter what.
Illegal aliens will have one year after the border is sealed to apply for a Purple Card. They must provide fingerprints that will remain on file permanently and be accessible to law enforcement. There will be a processing fee. If they can’t come up with it, they add so little to the country that they should not qualify.
After they are checked out and receive a Purple Card, they are free to work in this country for the specified number of years, renewable in perpetuity, as long as they are law abiding. They must verify they are working six months of every year. If they are unemployed for more than two months in any given 12-month period, they’re out. If they’re here to work, as we’re told, a work requirement shouldn’t be an issue.
By accepting the Purple Card, they receive the right to work and freely move about the country, as well as to leave and return. But they never, ever can obtain U.S. citizenship. Their children, guests in our country just as they are, cannot become U.S. citizens, even those born here during their Purple Card time. We will educate them, but they are not Americans. For that they must go through the legal process in their home country.
Third: They will pay all taxes owed from their earnings, including all FICA taxes. But they will be barred from ever collecting Social Security, qualifying for Medicaid or enrolling in Medicare. That is the price of admission, the price for violating our laws.
If, as Democrats say, immigration reform is about getting people “out of the shadows,” this does that. If, as Republicans say, they’re only here to work and help their families, this does that too. If it’s about something else, like creating voters who will undercut Americans’ votes, this will be opposed.
We’re told illegal aliens only want to work to support their families. This allows for that. There will be minimal disruption of the economy since those illegal aliens actually here to work will be free to do just that. Others, criminals and non-contributors, will be weeded out.
This must be coupled with an expedited deportation process. Anyone not willing to meet the criteria for this generous new plan made a choice, and that choice must have consequences. Committing a crime is another conscious choice, Americans must be protected from guests who would do them harm, in any way.
Citizenship, or even the right to live here on a temporary basis, is too precious to be handed out like Halloween candy.
Any or all of this idea is available, free of charge, to any politician who wants it. Mix it, mold it, change it, but keep the concept. Citizenship, the end result of amnesty, is what Americans dislike the most. Show some innovative thinking by removing it as a possibility.
On a personal note, thank you to everyone who sent well-wishes and generous gifts in response to last Sunday’s column about my impending wedding. I will be sending each of you a personal thank you once the “I do’s” are done and I have a moment to breathe.

Exactly. ANYTHING that permits those who illegally crossed the border to benefit from that illegal act - and this proposal does just that - IS AMNESTY. And is one of the major magnetic draws that keep the illegal flood coming. Those proposing such have to be made to explain what incentive this provides to the hundreds of millions who have yet to make the journey. Does it discourage them from the effort OR does it show yet again that there is indeed a great prize to be won at the end of the trip.

As a Payroll Supervisor in the mid-70’s, I have seen the illegal work pattern up close.
They use a compound last name such as Lopez-Gomez.
When it becomes clear that this person is using a non-matching name & Social Security number, this person already has moved on & is now using the same number, but becomes Gomez-Lopez as his/her last name. Those who support the invasion of the illegals actually tutor these people in the requirements of moving from job to job before they get a caught by a written notification from SS to the employer. That led to the birth of E-Verify, which is supposed to be a 24 hour time of information.
UNTIL this country takes a hard stand against the illegals, we will continue to deteriorate. I lived in So Calif for 29 years, and saw this happen. I will NEVER go back.

As for penalizing the legal, I’d be willing to bet that’s a minority of wire transfers to Mexico or anywhere south of Texas. As for those from other countries, I’ve amended my original plan to say anywhere south of Texas, not just Mexico, I thought that was included. Anyone sending money south of Texas, same terms. If it’s legitimate, sorry, start complaining to your govt. I know it sounds pretty cold, but this problem is big enough we have to take a tough stand. Some innocent money transfers might be more expensive, but as I said, I think it will be a minority.

Illegal RE entry should be a criminal offense. If you’ve already been sent back and refuse to stay there, time for a more restricted lifestyle. 1st time, just send them back. Since they are not American citizens, I don’t see where anyone gets the idea they have rights, I think the bill of rights says citizens, not anyone and everyone. I may be wrong...but the ones caught at the border should be immediately turned around and sent back with no further ado. Fingerprint and send back. Then if you come back again you’re a criminal.
Yeah I’m a hard ass about it, but I’ve seen first hand the problems caused by illegal immigrants. My tools have been stolen, and other things, I live in Texas and see illegal immigrants working every day while I can’t find a job, (and working jobs I’d love to have) I’ve seen them claim to not speak English then laugh when you walk away...I’ve seen the ghettos after 2 years of occupation by illegal immigrants, I’ve seen 15 living in a 2 bedroom apartment next door...throwing beer cans in my yard, the manager tried to force me to pick them up and I refused...and that’s just the surface. I’m sick of it after more than 30 years...
I also see no reason anything should be printed in Spanish, we speak English here. Know what you see in south of the border printed in English? Coke and McDonalds...that’s about it.

NEWS FLASH, Derek——Illegals are already collecting Medical in California. Since there is a very poor records system in Mexico & other countries south of us. I don’t see how ANY of these illegals could be “checked out”.
Use Rent/Eminent Domain to control 100 yards at the border.
Establish a line on the border, use a simple wire.

The fine for hiring an illegal is already $5000 per employee PER DAY. It is not being enforced.
Take 50% of every dime going to any country south of our border & set a high transfer fee on every Western Union transaction, also. Make it so expensive that it stops.
Do a better job of catching & prosecuting the drug cartel workers who are destroying our National lands with their Marijuana grows. Somehow, Los Angeles County deputies found $1.2 million in plants & took them out, but ‘missed’ the workers who still had breakfast cooking at their camp site. These cartel workers are very dangerous & they are getting scattered into the general population of the USA.
While the USA goes after cash deposits by legal & correct businesses, they could do a better job of tracing purchases of irrigation tubing, which can run to thousands of feet in these illegal drug cartel growing sites.

NEWS to me that such a restriction exists. I paid payrolls in Calif as a bookkeeper for a very long time, & at one time was a Payroll Supervisor.
We were very careful & still had a problem. The ‘records’ of persons from south of the border cannot be checked against the information their home countries can supply. I don’t think there is much in the way of personal records in any of those places. The drug cartels know more about who they are hiring than any American employer can find out, IMO.
Money transfers need to have a 50% fee—for any money going south of our borders. Also a large fee from Western Union. No exceptions. DAMN few “legal” Western Union transfers are involved. For any of those living in the western part of the USA, go to your local Western Union location on a Friday-Sat-or Sun & see the LINES of Hispanic people lined up to send money south.
Hard to get states that are giving our driver’s licenses & MediCal to illegals to pay attention to our concerns.

They are denied voting privledges. Ownership of land in their own name, and selected access to government services.
Worse if entering that country illegaly. No jobs, face steep fines and jail time before getting kicked out. Beside being denied use of government services, including; income and energy subsistance, food stamps, or bringing in family members ,or legal assistance paid by taxpayers .
We should not allow any such citizenship privledges to illegals who are from countries such as Mexico that deny to a legal American immigrant full citizenship privledges.
By strictly enforcing reciprocal citizenship treating illegals the way Mexico treat its illegals watch em leave on their own accord .

I work in health care in south Florida. You are spot on with the name changing game. It irks me to have to provide taxpayer funded services to people I know are gaming the system.
You missed a step:
0 - End the welfare state. Return to a service base economy: You use hospitals/schools/services, you PAY for hospitals/schools/services. This ONE step would solve, IMO, 90% of the illegal ‘problem’.
Though, I’m not for the E-verify: govt has no authority in the say/where/when one is hired for employment (IE: approval/license). You can’t be for the Const. in one area and subvert it in the next instance.
I am TOTALLY for the ‘hits’ one would take as an illegal: make it HURT, and hurt financially.
