TRUMP: ‘FLAT TAX IS OKAY’
Breitbart ^ | August 22, 2015 | IAN HANCHETT

Posted on 08/22/2015 4:25:30 PM PDT by Hojczyk

16 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump declared, “I think flat tax is okay” on Friday’s broadcast of the “Matt Murphy Show” on Birmingham, AL’s WAPI.

Trump said, “Who knows taxes better than me?” He continued, “You know, when they talk about fixing the tax, it’s so complicated, that people have to go and use H&R Block to do a $50,000 — a man who makes $50,000 has to spend money –.”

Host Matt Murphy then cut in to ask Trump if he supports the fair tax. Trump answered, “Well, I think fair tax is okay. And I think flat tax is okay. But, I think the simplest thing to get approved is just the simplification of the existing. You know, we can just simplify the existing, and then we can start thinking about other things. But, to move fast, the simplification would be very easy. I mean, we could take so many of these deductions, these false deductions off…which, by the way, benefit the wealthy. And lower taxes.” Trump added that the tax code doesn’t “take care of” the middle class, and he wants to “focus on” and “take care of” the middle class.

He said that the other day. Have several possibilities but emphasized they must be simpler and easier. He also mentioned having Forbes and Laffler stopping by. He is getting good people to give him good advice

I agree. Simplify first. Then move to other things. Fair tax right off the bat as proposed by guys like Huckabee would go nowhere.

Why? I can’t remember a presidential candidate that didn’t have a proposal for taxes.

Cruz wants a flat tax and to abolish the IRS. He has to use Congress too. I bet every candidate has a position on taxes

Not anymore. Obammy has set the standard. Stroke of the pen, law of the land.

I think he does.

My preference would be for the Fair Tax. But that requires a lot of new thinking. Rather than an income tax, it's a Point Of Sale tax. The changeover would be a big deal, and Congress probably wouldn't be in favor of a complete changeover -- then you might have an income tax AND a national sales tax. No one likes that idea, but so much of legislative history shows us that things get complicated and nothing really goes away.

So Trump's point is not a bad one. We have a progressive income tax. It has some brackets. Well, keep the essence. Simplify it, shrink the brackets, and see if Congress won't mess that up too badly.

I think Trump is looking for something that is both simpler and doable. He knows Congress will complicate things if it can.

A flat tax isn’t ok - it’s great!

Our Byzantine tax code is the source of much of our present corruption and government paralysis. It directly spawned Louis Lehrner and her ilk

A “flat tax” could be implemented by congress.
The “fair tax” would require a constitutional amendment.

For most of the middle class and lower class wouldn't the flat tax or fair tax be a tax increase?
