Leprosy cases in Florida are higher than normal, and experts are blaming armadillos.

WJAX-TV reports that nine cases have been reported across Florida so far this year, already nearly matching the state's average of 10 cases per year, according to the Department of Health.

Dr. Sunil Joshi, president of the Duval County Medical Society, says each case this year has involved people who were in direct contact with armadillos.

Same as with people: loss of digits, and facial disfigurement.

Armadillos don't *have* leprosy, they *carry* the cause of it, without contracting the disease themselves. I've known this since circa 1981-1982, courtesy of the US Army, and the numerous armadillos around Fort Hood, Texas.

Since armadillos *carry* the disease without symptoms, the correct answer is *any* armadillo can potentially infect you with Hansen's disease, and should not be handled without proper precautions...

So it’s still OK to hang out with the ones who don’t have leprosy.

Nothing funner than an armadillo playing charades at your pool party.

First, they came to prevent us from kissing our salmonella infected chickens, but I didn’t say anything because I don’t have chickens.

Then, they came for our leprosy-infected armadillos, but of course, there are no armadillos in Pennsylvania, so I said nothing.

Then they came for our groundhogs, but there was no one left to speak up for me...

“how can I tell if an armadillo has leprosy or not”.

They wear little bells around their necks to announce their arrival.
