In an effort to bring teenagers back to the cafeteria, Elmbrook School District high schools are dropping out of the federal school lunch program.
The district has seen a slow decline in lunch participation, by about four percent overall, since the start of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, said Cheryl Peil, Elmbrook's director of food services.
The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act is a federal bill that provides funding for multiple food programs intended to improve child nutrition.
Districts who opt for the funding are required to abide by new, "common-sense standards for fat, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium, while promoting products that have whole grains, low fat dairy, fruits, vegetables or protein foods as their main ingredients," the United States Department of Agriculture states on its website.
But many Elmbrook high school students were not fond of the food offerings established under the requirements, Peil said. Some students simply just stopped eating the food they didn't want and threw it away

Story from Wisconsin
Is that the name for Michelle-chow?
Good for them.
Federal nutrition. There’s an oxymoron for you.
Common-sense is the term for I order you to eat/not eat and your stupid (you have no common sense) if you raise a conflict with my authority.
Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act....
Are they sure this isn’t a program to feed goats?
Who want’s to eat food mandated by a tranny?
School districts would save millions ... immediately ... per year .... if they closed the cafeteria’s and told everyone to brown bag it.
Wonder how much Michelle’s brilliant idea has cost schools in millions of dollars worth of food thrown in the trash since 2010?
If the individual School Districts don’t sign up for Federal money, they also don’t have to comply with Federal contracting requirements....which make the “contracted products/services” twice as expensive,at a minimum, and drops the quality by at least 50%.
And just in case you are really curious about “how things work”, no, the Feds won’t allow established local food distributors to even bid on those contracts.
Because ...diversity, or something(graft/corruption/nepotism)!
I applaud this school for giving students what they want to eat. Article says students would rather pay more to eat what they like, and I would, too.
Elmbrook High drops out of Federal School Lunch program; foregoes subsidies.
Well, I don’t think that anyone in Elmbrook needs lunch subsidies.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this wisconsin interest ping list.
Considering how food prices have risen for us, if they’ve gone up for the schools it’s unthinkable the cost. Maybe they should shut down, but imagine the caterwauling from the unions! I took lunch, too—except on Friday, gotta have them fish sandwiches for a quarter—just like McD’s!
