Chinese cultivated tea 6,000 years ago, new archaeological evidence suggests

Tea is one of the most popular drinks around the world and new research has revealed that people in China were enjoying the brew long before the pyramids were being built.

The findings were made by a Chinese research team, who investigated the Tianluo Mountain, in the city of Yuyao in east China, to find China's earliest remains of human tea brewing.

After nearly 10 years of analysis, archaeologists found that people had been brewing tea for around 6,000 years, reported People's Daily Online.

The findings from the decade-long excavation were announced at the Archaeological Institute of Zhejing Province, on the 18th June.

Research began in 2004 when the team went to the mountain and found defined grooves in the earth near a tree's roots, as well as some broken pottery.

Both Japan's Northeast University and the Tea Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agriculture Sciences later confirmed that the roots contained theanine - an amino acid characteristic of tea plants.

I’m a tea fanatic. Green, Pu Erh, Oolong. Love them. At least 3 mugs a day. But tea bought in super markets are disgraceful! Complete garbage. I buy my tea from Generation Tea, and it’s wonderful! Not what Americans and Brits are used to drinking. Go to their site and look around. I very, very highly recommend their teas! Give yourself a treat!

Tea is Tea; yes, I’m sure there are some elite or better quality brands but I get a good quenched thirst from some rather ordinary teas, brew green and let it brew, let it get cold in the fridge, drink on a hot day, very good.

There is a whole book on green tea, good stuff but there is extract for people who really want to max out on its benefits.

And what? The Brits saying something like they’ll have tea when actually it’s a small meal in the afternoon.

My mother, from West Virginia, always had iced tea for us in the summer, bless her! I actually take the green tea extract myself. If you look at the effective doses for studies of Japanese tea drinkers, it involves drinking six plus cups of tea a day!
