A special prosecutor said Wednesday that hell ask a Collin County grand jury to indict Texas Attorney Ken Paxton on first-degree felony charges of violating state securities law.
The prosecutor, Houston defense attorney Kent Schaffer, says a Texas Rangers investigation of Paxton revealed that the attorney general broke laws beyond what he admitted to last year, when he was fined $1,000 by the State Securities Board.
Thats what we intend to present to the grand jury, said Schaffer of a first-degree felony case. We have a sufficient amount of evidence. Whether it leads to a criminal indictment or not is up to the grand jury.
Last year, Paxton admitted to the Texas State Securities Board that while he was in the Legislature, he solicited clients for a friend's investment firm without being registered with the state. He paid a $1,000 fine and was reprimanded by the board.
Paxton solicited the clients in 2004, 2005 and 2012 while serving as a Republican state representative for a Collin County district. The question of criminal violations has yet to be addressed, though Paxton describes the incidents as an administrative error.

Any one have any insight as to what is going on?
More criminalizing opposition to the left.
This is total BS and Hillary Clinton gets off for true felonies. Makes me sick. The USA is in a bad state right now with the liberals in control of everything. Why don’t the republicans act like this DA and demand that Hillary be indicted? I’m sick of these criminals.
If you're a Republican, forget it. Wave bye-bye.
Yeah, where is our resident bomb thrower Trump on this.
Why isn’t he demanding Hillary be prosecuted?
Just once I'd like to see a judge stomp on pissants like this.
Of course, that's just me.
It MIGHT be legal in Texas.
Almost nothing after last August other than articles and blog posts referring to the Aug 24 articles.
So the indictment served its purpose, which is to smear a Republican over a minor issue.
Just like this - a first degree felony over not registering to help a friend get business? Serious legal overreach.
Especially since he was not paid for any work.

It’s the Ronnie Earl RAT Syndrome. Find a chink in some GOP officeholder’s armor and feed it to a “select” grand jury. This is similar to the John Chisholm RAT Syndrome in Wisconsin. The problem is that the GOP elect people that have skeletons in their closet and these RATS are only too willing to air their discretions in a “public forum.” Basically, if you are a Republican without sin, you are good to go (maybe). Otherwise you had better not seek public office today. Paxton is in for a ride, because RAT county DA’s in Texas evidently have carte blanche to trample whomever they choose.
The headline makes it sound like he hacked up a little old lady with a machete while holding up a liquor store.
First degree felony is murder, rape, drugs, not an ethics violation which is all this really is.
The Perry phony case was trumped up by the Texas Public Integrity Unit, which is part of the office of the Travis County District Attorney (Travis County being the county in which the state capitol is located).
The TPIU seems only to indict Republicans. They also got Tom Delay.
This prosecution seems to be coming from a special prosecutor; I am not able to discover who hired the special prosecutor.
Well, he was apparently getting a split of commissions received by the investment councilor to whom he was steering clients while he was serving as Attorney General. The two of them were keeping the fee-splitting arrangement a secret.
So basically the Attorney General of Texas was acting as a confidential sales rainmaker for an investment firm, and was getting a kickback for his efforts.
If all that is true, it strikes me as being not too cool.
I wouldn't be bothered if Democrats got anything within a thousand miles of the same treatment, but that's a joke as we all know.

If Trump really wanted to create a legacy, he should offer a 10 million dollar reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction and/or impeachment of present and past ranking Obama administration officials. To paraphrase Carville, “Drag 10 million dollars through Washington DC and there’s no telling what you will find.”
Trump could offer money for Hillary’s missing EMails. Everything from Benghazi treachery to steamy online lesbian sex with Huma.. Would be interesting to get someone to turn them over.
Paxton on Saturday issued statement against same sex marriage. That’s what’s going on.
Evidently, he was soliciting clients for a friend's investment service. And he wasn't registered with the state.
Frankly, I don't understand quite why one would have to be registered with the state in order to recommend an investment service -- whether you're a state representative or not. <
Doesn't sound criminal to me...
Might be time for the TX legislature to strip the Austin area DAs office of jurisdiction over state government officials.
