TAMPA Health officials in Hillsborough County are keeping a close watch on the rising number of HIV/AIDS cases in the area.
The Florida Department of Health reported 272 new cases of the human immunodeficiency virus in Hillsborough County in 2012. In 2013, that number jumped to 347, and in 2014 it jumped again to 445.
Normally, an increase over one year isnt a cause for alarm among health officials because it could just be a blip, experts said. But this year-over-year spike in the number of new cases has them concerned.
Its being very closely monitored, said Lisa Nugent, planning administrator with the nonprofit Ryan White Care Council of West Central Florida.
More people undergoing tests could explain the rise in reported cases, officials said.
On Friday, the Hillsborough County branch of the Florida Health Department marked National HIV Testing Day by opening its doors and offering free screenings for HIV, chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea.

Speaking of which how much of this rise is IV drug use / needle sharing as Heroin use increases as people look for big pharma pain killer substitutes..
Yep, hepatitis too. Syphilis as well. The um, “physical mechanics” of MSM (men who have sex with men) is just the perfect vector for disease transmission. Especially when one is neither monogamous nor practicing even a modicum of safety.
I’ve had activists counterattack with “well, straight people have that kind of sex, too” and “the statistics show that most HIV+ people are heterosexual.”
The first argument is true, but also irrelevant, as the CDC’s stats bear out heterosexuals do not account for a significant percentage of disease transmission. The second is classic activist misleading. It is true that heterosexual men and women make up the biggest number of HIV cases...IF you include Africa and perhaps sex-trade heavy countries in Asia. AIDS has devastated Africa, and many today only live thanks to George W. Bush’s initiatives. In the U.S. and other developed nations, however, it is MSM each and every time who represent the overwhelming majority of infections.
It is this reason that I am terrified by the move to life the MSM blood ban. It’s just madness to accept blood from such a high-risk group.
What does it cost to treat these yoyos with AIDS? 100,000 dollars a year for medicines?
The scourge of God.
Obame has a Surgeon General?
Doctor Doolittle I presume??
Natural selection doesn’t seem to favor the homo lifestyle.
Not not that there’s anything wrong with that! /Seinfeld
and also, homosexuality is about the “love” not the anal sex...
There's another homo plague coming. It's bigger, faster, more powerful, and more deadly than AIDs. We're talking death within hours.
Watch for it. It's already killed two homos in NY. It's still out there waiting to strike. All that's needed is an active carrier.
The homos think they can declare war on nature and natures God and win.
Well, they can't and they won't.

What is that aboout
That was my point; if heroin use is skyrocketing, and this much of the rise in AIDS is gay men instead of IV drug users...
I understand that spraying your “tool” before use with RAID wasp and hornet killer will prevent this from happening.
I encourage all “gays” to try it. It’s just like the old cereal commercial with little Mikey...”he likes it!”
In this case, i am for much stricter gun control laws.
Apparently there has been no more news about it.
And the costs of treatment, etc. are paid for by YOU....and me.
I also read recently that the increased cases of syphilis are primarily in the “gay” community....
But nothing to see, love is love, stay out of my bedroom, blah blah...
Yet pro-homosexual studies have shown that plenty of either married or committed homosexual male couples (50-60 percent) are proud of all the fun they get out of OPEN relationships.
