Governor Greg Abbott today released the following statement regarding the Supreme Courts same-sex marriage ruling:
The Supreme Court has abandoned its role as an impartial judicial arbiter and has become an unelected nine-member legislature. Five Justices on the Supreme Court have imposed on the entire country their personal views on an issue that the Constitution and the Courts previous decisions reserve to the people of the States.
Despite the Supreme Courts rulings, Texans fundamental right to religious liberty remains protected. No Texan is required by the Supreme Courts decision to act contrary to his or her religious beliefs regarding marriage.
The Texas Constitution guarantees that [n]o human authority ought, in any case whatsoever, to control or interfere with the rights of conscience in matters of religion. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees the free exercise of religion; and the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act, combined with the newly enacted Pastor Protection Act, provide robust legal protections to Texans whose faith commands them to adhere to the traditional understanding of marriage.
As I have done in the past, I will continue to defend the religious liberties of all Texansincluding those whose conscience dictates that marriage is only the union of one man and one woman. Later today, I will be issuing a directive to state agencies instructing them to prioritize the protection of Texans religious liberties.
That's right. Win or loose sometimes you just have to fight the good fight and do your best and don't back down. The libs wont back down fighting for self destruction.
"Do what is right and damn the consequences." -- President Sam Houston (President of the Republic of Texas)
State involvement in marriage, before the same-sex distraction, had been evolving to a concern that children born should have registered birth certificates with a father and mother’s name on it so that in the event of child abandonment, the state would have a recourse to the child becoming a ward of the state.
Other reasons for state marriage registrations was as evidence of marriage in a court of law, for divorce, for bigamy allegations.
Your idea that lawyers should draw up papers establishing the de facto marriage is a good one.
I am sure there’s a way for states to exit the marriage license issuance business.
In Alabama, I believe a marriage license is issued by a probate judge so the state executive offices are free from it.
There’s a way out of the darkness. But more darkness should be expected from SCOTUS and the federal government. I’ve never seen it so bad as now.
Yes. California rejected gay marriage. However, the will of the people was overridden by the judiciary.
THAT, right there, is an AMERICAN Man... and a Texan.
God bless Texas.
Go Texas!!!
Just an interesting note. Texas just passed a law setting up a Texas gold depository. We are moving to transfer a billion in bullion back to Texas.
Perhaps our legislators are preparing for a national economic collapse. Just sayin.
Nothing in this proclamation states that the State of Texas will not recognize same-sex marriage.
No time period for a CL marriage in TX.
Three elements:
Intent to be married
Hold out as being married
Stay together one night.
Just FYI.
That said, the legislature could abolish both statutory and CL marriage thus removing the state from the marriage business.
Maybe various like-minded counties of WA state should self-identify as NW TX...
The states can tell SCOTUS to pound sand. If “by the States” means “by the Federal Government,” as established in last week’s ObamaCare decision, then “the States” need not issue any gay-marriage license — that’s now Fedzilla’s purview.
I think your right. Some churches are NOT going to comply and will elect to “fall on their sword”.
So, then what?
Uh, here come da feds to arrest Christian Church members for obeying Texas law instead of Kennedy and his four associate activists and Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Boehner and mitchell.
What will Texas do? Is this where it all begins?
Fight it out in the courts you say?! Well, the courts ARE the problem!
thanks for the info!
Thank you, Jim!
to wit; Sodomized marriage...
The Slippery Slope.. HAS BECOME.. a “Razor blade”...
the slide will cleave morals from immorality..
