The government knows better than the parents on how to care for your children.

Maybe they should have a talk with their neighbor.

A neighbor called the cops, and when the parents arrived—having been delayed by traffic and rain—they were arrested for negligence.

Well, if the cops arrested them, they MUST have been doing something wrong. </FRcopsucker>

At 11 I was hunting alone with my own rifle and ranging as far as 30 miles on my bicycle.

I had access to a 12 foot boat with a 7.5hp outboard.

I’ll be called racist for saying this, but why is this only happening to whom I assume are white parents? Is it nosy neighbors who report them??

I live in an oil patch town with lots of Mexican families, adults who barely speak English, and their kids little or big, run free, play in streets, or playgrounds with no supervision. Or maybe a toddler watched by a 7 or 8 year old.
Yet I do not hear of this occurring with minorities.

11 years old, WOW, they should have put my parents to death as I was driving a tractor unsupervised on the farm at that age...

If I was arrested for this, there would be repercussions.

Very severe ones.

And it would START with the neighbor, but it would escalate to the arresting cop(s) and personnel in the system.

At the very least, the busy body neighbor should have taken a chair to the backyard, sat down and watched the 11 y/o. That is if she was really concerned. Neihborliness has disappeared too much in America. People say they are afraid to help out. . Bullshlt. I think they are conveniently, for them, afraid to help out. No time. Too much responsibility. Let George do it. Liability. I’ll take my chances helping someone.

My great granddad and great granddad were both latchkey kids before DHS and lib’s came and told parents how to raise their kids; both of them lived in New York City (Brooklyn) and would take the subway by themselves to go to NYC and just bum around. They were eight and nine at the time.

Back in the good ol' days the neighbor would have seen the child and asked him if he wanted something to drink or a snack.

If the child responded that they were fine they would have been left to their own devices.

Or the neighbor would have had a key to the house and just let the child in.

What jerk neighbors. They couldn’t just ask the boy why he was out. They couldn’t say, “if you need any snacks or water come on over.” And what the heck are they thinking when a kid playing in the yard is suspicious?

I would make their lives hell. The kid can’t play, on a late spring day for 90 minutes? I remember locking myself out for hours when I would forget the house key. And the neighbors didn’t call the cops. I would go to their houses sometimes because they usually had friends my age.

Is there a legal age for being home alone?

All through the 1980s and 1990s the term "latchkey kid" was common.

It was assumed that grade school children would take the bus home from school at 3pm and wait at home until 5ish when their folks got home from work.

Here is the law: "A person who willfully or by culpable negligence neglects a child without causing great bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement to the child commits a felony of the third degree."

Yep, that is what the government did. Whom should we start with to be held culpable? The neighbour?

When I was 11 I spent entire 10-12 hour stretches completely by myself, deep in the woods behind my house. Just me and my Crosman 760 BB gun.

My parents would probably be executed for that today.
