Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is praying for political lightning to strike twice.
Even after pulling an upset win in the Iowa caucuses four years ago and going on to survive the longest against eventual nominee Mitt Romney, the GOP presidential hopeful is again the underdog in a much more crowded 2016 field.
Expected to announce his second bid for president in his hometown of Butler, Pa., Wednesday, Santorum is nowhere near the silver-medal finish he pulled off in 2012. But that's not stopping him from still preaching his brand of "blue-collar conservatism" with an emphasis on workers and manufacturing while also reiterating his foreign-policy experience and hoping the unthinkable can happen again.
Speaking to a small crowd at a Legends restaurant in Marshalltown, Iowa, the afternoon after his speech at the Iowa Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner earlier this month, Santorum exuded confidence, but admitted it's a much steeper climb than last time.
"There's potentially 16 people on the Republican side, so I don't envy you," Santorum told the crowd. "As one of my friends here in Iowa says, there's a lot of folks with a 'new car smell.' I just think it's important to nominate somebody that you know and that you trust, because trust is the most important thing."

He couldn’t even keep his Senate seat...................
Clearly no conservative media would care to give Ricky the ink about the hope of his POTUS candidacy. And of course, that makes him whiny and angry ...
Has he trotted out a new dead baby for photos?
What a whacko.
He’s more like Ambien in a bottle than lightning.
Rick, there’s a message in that bottle. Read it. It says ‘Not Happening, Bro.”.
I voted for Santorum last time.
I’m voting for Cruz this time.
Probably be riding it instead.
He’s the Catholic Huckabee.
In it to siphon-off the one-issue voters.
And, yes, I am Catholic and calling out this fake POS.
I think he’s more like flat-TAB in a bottle, than anything else. I might be willing to vote for him as some state attorney general or vice-governor....but that’s about as far as I’d go.
We could do worse but he should have proven that he’s electable at a lower level. Besides, we have Cruz.
He’s not a one issue candidate. However, he’s also not Presidential material.
Actually, I think Santorum is running for either a SCOTUS seat or a Cabinet position. That’s why he keeps running. If the pendulum swings car right he is a natural fit for either. I can see either happening w/a Cruz Administration (with a solid right Congress and Senate).
Putting on my asbestos now...
This is NPR pushing Santorum for obvious reasons.
He had his chance last time. Get over it Rick.
Yes, NPR has been pushing Huckabee. Now they add Santorum to their split-the-conservative-vote portfolio.
He has a weak chin and looks like he’s constantly worried. I don’t like him.
Is it Santuckabee or Huckatorum?
Rick was the runner-up last time. Shouldn’t it be “his turn”?
